More Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 details show up

Featuring 2048 CUDA cores Dotata di 2048 CUDA Core

Today we finally have some additional information regarding Nvidia's upcoming Geforce GTX 980 graphics card based on the 28nm GM204 GPU.

According to a fresh report from Videocardz.com, the GTX 980 will feature 2048 CUDA and not 1920 as it was earlier rumored. This most likely means that the fully enabled GM204 packs 16 Stream Multiprocessor Maxwell (SMM) units with 128 CUDA cores per unit. The Geforce GTX 970 on the other hand will feature 13 SMMs for 1664 CUDA cores.

The report suggest that the Geforce GTX 980 will have a around 175W TDP while the GTX 970 is set at 145W. These numbers also show that the GM204 Maxwell GPU is definitely much more power efficient when compared to the GK104, despite the fact that they both are made on the same 28nm manufacturing process. These TDP ratings for the GM204, suggest that both graphics card will only need two 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors although we are quite sure that some customs designs will push that to 6+8-pin design for further overclocking headroom.

In addition to these details regarding the actual GPU, Chiphell.com posted a clear picture of output and the rear vent part of the Geforce GTX 980 graphics card which shows that Nvidia has decided to go for the triangle vent design which allows more space on the bracket to be used for airflow without compromising the structural rigidity, something we have seen on the dual-GPU GTX Titan Z graphics card.

The display output configuration is quite interesting as well since Nvidia has decided to use a total of three DisplayPort outputs, one HDMI 2.0 and a dual-link DVI.

In case you missed it, Nvidia is expected to officially announced both of these new GTX 900 series graphics cards during its Game24 event on 19th of September.
