AMD Tonga XT blueprints reveal more details

Brings HSA support, 384-bit bus and 2048 SPs

While we already wrote about it back when Tonga Pro Radeon R9 285 was launched, today we have a couple of more concrete details regarding the Tonga XT GPU, which should have already debuted into the Radeon R9 285X graphics card.

While there have been a couple of reports regarding the Tonga XT GPU before, the recent documents published by PC Watch, shows a bit more details. Like our sources suggested back when Tonga Pro was launched, Tonga XT GPU has a slightly different design and features 32 Compute Units and six 64-bit memory controller, adding up to 2048 Stream Processors and 384-bit memory interface.

While two members of the same GPU family do not usually have a different memory interface, our sources were quite confident that it was the case, which pretty much makes the Tonga GPU a rather interesting GPU and quite close to the Tahiti GPU, in terms of design. It also supports the HSA as well as the GCN 1.1. While there are no precise information regarding the actual clocks, it will probably end up to be a bit higher than 918MHz reference clock on the Tonga Pro based Radeon R9 285. Of course, since it packs a 384-bit memory interface, Tonga XT based graphics card will also feature 3GB of GDDR5 memory.

These specifications will put the future Tonga XT based graphics card somewhere above the Radeon R9 280X, which it means to replace, and it will definitely be a decent upgrade from the Tonga Pro based Radeon R9 285. New architecture on Tonga XT should also offer better power efficiency.

Unfortunately, Tonga XT based Radeon R9 285X graphics card should have already launched and recent rumors suggested that such graphics card is either canceled or delayed, and we still do not have any more details regarding it. Nvidia certainly put a lot of pressure on AMD with the launch of Maxwell based GTX 970 and the GTX 980 graphics cards but hopefully, Tonga XT is just delayed and we will see it soon enough.
