AMD trolling the GTX 970 memory problem

Cuts the price of the R9 290X

If you follow the news, you could not have missed the GTX 970 problem with its 4 GB of memory, which is restricted to 3,25 GB of usable memory. AMD certainly did not miss it and it was just a matter of time before we had a first response.

When an opportunity like this arises, it is generally the marketing department that will find a way to enjoy it. Robert Hallock, who is in charge of marketing at AMD, had a rather neat idea to make the picture which you can see below.

A good big troll against NVIDIA graphics cards which puts forward the R9 290 and R9 290X which also have 4 GB of memory in addition to a 512-bit memory interface. A way to forget the power consumption of those graphics cards by putting forward a more consistent memory part.

To drive the nail, AMD has also cut the price of the R9 290X to $299 on some models, like the GIGABYTE R9 290X OC in the USA, which puts the board below the price of the first GTX 970.

The price and marketing war between AMD and NVIDIA is not over and we will soon know if the future R9 380X may put the spotlight back on AMD.
