Micron Technology has announced that it has started shipping its first GDDR5 memory chips based on 20nm-class manufacturing process, including 8Gb GDDR5 chips.

While it did not give out any precise details regarding those 20nm-class chips and still has not added them to its product lineup, it is most likely that we are looking at 8Gb GDDR5 chips, which can be used for both consoles as well as graphics cards.

While the next big thing in memory space is stacked High Bandwidth Memory, there are still plenty of graphics cards with GDDR5 memory on the market as only AMD Radeon Fury lineup will use HBM. Bigger deal for Micron will be in console space, where Playstation 4 uses 16 4Gb GDDR5 chips and can simplify the design by switching to 8Gb chips.

Earlier this year, Micron already announced that it was sampling those same 8Gb GDDR5 memory chips to two customers, most likely in graphics card and console markets.

During that same financial call for the third quarter of fiscal 2015, Micron's revenues were at US $3.85 billion, or 8 percent lower compared to the last quarter and 3 percent lower compared to the same quarter last year. Company reported net income of US $491 million.
