First overclock results with MSI Z170A Gaming M7

Core i7-6700K pushed up to 4700 MHz by Pixy

Few weeks ago we had a chance to check out the overclocking preview of the MSI Z170A Gaming M7 motherboard in the hands of the famous Italian overclocker Pixy. All of the tests were performed with AIO water cooling system.

For the test setup, Pixy used a Core i7-6700K ES CPU paired with a set of Kingston HyperX Predator 4x4GB 3000 C16 memory. Like we mentioned earlier, the CPU was cooled by a Cooler Master Nepton 280L AiO liquid cooler.

In order to test the potential of the CPU, the benchmarking started with some multi-thread benchmarks in stock mode (with turbo enabled) and in overclocking mode with a frequency of 4700 MHz at 1.440v. The results obtained during the tests are fairly linear. With a 500MHz higher frequency, we found an increase of 11% in Cinebench R15, 8% in wPrime 32M, and 7% in wPrime 1024M and XTU.

In addition to these benchmarks and overclocking results, the Italian overclocker, tried to push the CPU up step-by-step by only increasing the BLCK and reaching an interesting frequency of 260 MHz. This result is very good and opens up interesting scenarios on the possibility of future overclocking on Skylake i3 and Pentium CPUs, which lack unlocked multiplier.

Bear in mind that all of this was done with summer temperatures which were probably higher than 30 degrees, but the temperature detected from Intel XTU are significantly higher since the CPU easily reached and hit 90 degrees at 4700 MHz.

We are sure that the HWBot database will soon be filled with numerous benchmark results therefore we recommend to sit tight and wait for plenty of new records. We also hope to see further LN2 test from our friend Pixy.

Below you can check out all the benchmarks as well as the obtained results.
