Nvidia announces GRID 2.0

At VMworld conference

During VMware's annual VMworld conference, Nvidia has announced the next generation Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) GPU technology, the GRID 2.0.

In case you missed it, Nvidia launched the GRID 1.0 back in 2012 and with the next-generation, Nvidia expands the number of users, adds a couple of new features and improves the performance, compared to the GRID 1.0.

With the release of new Tesla graphics cards, the Tesla M60 and Tesla M6, both based on Maxwell GM204 GPU, Nvidia promises double the performance compared to earlier available GRID K-series graphics cards, which in the end allows either the performance to be doubled or the number of concurrent users to be doubled, depending on the application.

With the introduction of Tesla M6, which is actually an MXM form-factor graphics card, Nvidia has also improved the physical density of VDI hosting. In addition to these improvements, the new software now supports up to 128 users per server, supports CUDA, improves guest OS support with multiple operating systems, including Linux and features support for 4K/UHD monitor.

According to Nvidia, GRID 2.0 is already in testing with dozen companies and the final customer version is expected on September 15th.
