Microsoft announces new 2-in-1 Surface Book

First Microsoft notebook

While most of the devices have already leaked before the official Windows 10 event in New York, Microsoft came to the show with a rather big surprise, its first 2-in-1 hybrid notebook called the Surface Book.

Describing it as the world's most powerful, thinnest PC and, ounce for ounce, the fastest 13-inch notebook on the planet, the Surface Book features a rather uncommon 3:2 aspect ratio 13.5-inch PixelSense display with 3000x2000 resolution (267ppi). Since this is a PixelSense display it has full pen and touch support.

Measuring at 312.3x232.1x13.0-22.8mm with 1.516kg weight, the Surface Book is quite thin and light and certainly looks like a high-end 13-inch notebook. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not reveal any specific details regarding CPU choices, but did note that you can pick either Intel 6th generation Core Skylake Core i5 or Core i7 CPU. The Surface Book will also feature an optional and still unknown dedicated Nvidia Geforce GPU with GDDR5 memory, up to 16GB of RAM and up 1TB of SSD storage.

The biggest feature of the Surface Book is its Dynamic Fulcrum Hinge, which uses Muscle Wire to hold the screen and you actually have to press a button in order to detach the screen. As you can see from the video below, the screen can be reversed in case you want to keep the base and use the Surface Book as a tablet.

The rest of the features are pretty similar to the Surface Pro 4 as you get the same magnesium chassis, 8-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front cameras, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and other minor things. Since it has a larger screen, Microsoft made a proper keyboard for Surface Book. It has a 1.6mm key travel, Microsoft Precision touchpad with glass top and five-point touch, backlight and the base also includes USB ports, SD card reader, mini-DisplayPort output and SurfaceConnect port.

The Microsoft Surface Book should be already available for pre-order with a starting price set at US $1,499 and it is expected to ship on October 26th. The price can climb as high as US $2700 with Core i7 CPU, Geforce GPU, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of PCIe 3.0 SSD storage.
