AMD will not have 20nm GPUs this year

Sticking to 28nm in 2014

It appears that AMD will not be ready with 20nm GPUs this year, at least acoording to what AMD's senior VP Lisa Su noted during AMD's Q1 investors call.

During AMD's Q1 investors call and in a response to question by Wells Fargo, Lisa Su noted that the company will stick to 28nm throughout 2014 and will later move to 20nm and FinFET manufacturing process after that. I think what I said earlier sort of what we're doing in terms of technology strategy, we are 28 this year, we have 20-nanometer in design, and then FinFET thereafter. So that's the overall product portfolio," said Lisa Su.

Both the AMD and Nvidia depend on TSMC when it comes to manufacturing GPUs and TSMC has been facing some big delays when it comes to 20nm manufacturing process. If you remember, things were not much different with the 28nm one either.

According to recent reports, Nvidia expects both the performance-segment GM204 and the mid-range GM206 chips, based on 28nm, to come tape out sometime late this month while first products based on those chips are expected in late Q4 2014 and early Q1 2014, respectively.
