Micron releases new M500 DC SSD for data centers

Optimal balance of performance, price and features

Micron has announced a new addition to its enterprise line of solid state drives (SSDs) designed specifically for data center storage platforms, the Micron M500DC SATA SSD.

Designed to offer data centers the optimal balance of enterprise class features, performance and price in 24/7 enterprise workloads, the new M500DC is based on Micron's 20nm MLC NAND flash as well as a fifth generation custom firmware, according to Micron.

To be available in 120, 240, 480 and 800GB capacities as well as 1.8-inch 5mm thick and 2.5-inch 7mm thick SATA form factors, the new M500DC SSD series will also features Extended Performance and Enhanced Reliability Technology (XPERT) feature suite which integrates storage media and controller in a comprehensive architecture specifically suited for high workload demands of data center by extending drive life, protecting data and ensuring overall data integrity.

"Data centers are the linchpins connecting business and consumers to the information and services they want on a daily basis," said Darren Thomas, vice president of storage at Micron. "The M500DC is a workhorse drive tailored to our enterprise customers' needs-including increased capacity, exceptional performance and enterprise-class data protection."

According to Micron, the new M500DC SSD series is currently in production and sold directly to OEMs or via Micron's distribution partners.
