Features

Black Edition

Since mid 2014 Gigabyte offers their so called Black Edition products. There are some select graphics cards as well as motherboards which receive special treatment regarding quality control. Only for this purpose the manufacturer built a testing facility, which is used to run 168 hour burn-in tests on motherboards and graphics cards. Every single Black Edition product receives this treatment before it gets packed and shipped.

Cloud Station

Cloud Station is a software suite from Gigabyte, which is supposed to link smartphones/tablet with computers and provide additional features:

  • HomeCloud: Filesharing between computer and smartphone/tablet
  • HotSpot: computer can be turned into a wireless access point
  • Gigabyte Remote: remote control mouse, keyboard as well as Windows Media Player via smartphone/tablet
  • Remote OC: overclocking via smartphone
  • Auto Green: activate energy saving options via smartphone

Killer E2201

Gigabyte equips this motherboard with an E2201 Killer NIC. This chip is capable of providing features like traffic shaping on application level, which can help realizing a smoother online gaming experience.

M.2 Support

The Z97X-UD5H-BK features an M.2 slot which is placed between the first PCIe slot and the CPU socket. This motherboard can be equipped with an M.2 SSD and it is wired directly to the Z97 PCH using two PCI Express lanes. Therefore you get x2 bandwidth and in other words up to 10 Gbps can be pushed over the bus, which is almost twice the performance compared to the SATA-III port.

Long lifespan Black Solid caps

Since quite some time Gigabyte has been equipping its boards with digital power designs. On the Z97X-UD5H-BK there are only high-end components when it comes to the power design. There are for example PWM controllers from PowIRstage as well as ICs from International Recitifier. Other than that there are "Black Solid Caps", which offer 10'000 operating hours, which is up to three times as much than what you get from standard caps.

SATA Express Connector

SATA Express is a new port for storage devices that basically combines two SATA connectors and bundles them for higher performance. Each SATA Express port has been wired using two PCI Express Gen2 lanes offering a total of 10 Gbps bandwidth. Compared to SATA-III with 6 Gbps bandwidth this is quite an improvement.
