Announcement:
Despite the circumstance that the rating of a product is based on as many
objective facts as possible there are factors which can have an influence on a
rating after publication. Every autor may perceive data differently over time
whereas one possible reason for example is a deeper background knowledge or
understanding of certain processes. Certain unforseen market conditions as well
as changes have the potential to render a descision made at a certain point in
time obsolete.
The XLR8 from Extrememory is a SandForce SF-2281 based SSD which comes with
remarkably constant performance values. Especially the sequential throughput
rates don't show much deviation. Regarding random Read/Write operations the this
drive is able to score very well regarding the random read IOPS. In fact the
drive is almost as fast as the 240 Gigabyte models with SF-2281 controller.
Normally the 240 Gigabyte drives are much faster than the 120 Gigabyte models.
Concerning random writes one might wish that there were a few thousand more IOPS
than what we got from the benchmark.
The delivery is quite poor. Users who want to migrate their operating
system from a HDD to their new SSD might be very happy about a Disk Imaging
Software like for example one can get it from Acronis or Symantec.
Last but not least there is the price: at the moment you'll have to pay CHF
229.- (est. EUR 191.-) for this 120 Gigabyte SF-2281 drive with Toggle NAND
flash. This is not exactly cheap but still competitive.
We give this drive good four out of five
stars.
