The Newton R3 is a 80Plus Platinum PSU. This means, that the efficiency of this PSU should be above 90% at 20% load, above 92% at 50% load and above 89% at 100% load.

We can see the first hint for a high Quality PSU as soon as we take a closer look at it. First of all you get a very nicely designed piece of hardware with this PSU. The transient filtering stage is as expected: high end. The transient filtering stage should consist of two ferrite coils, two ceramic capacitors (Y caps), one metalized polyester cap (X cap), one metal oxide varistor (MOV) and eventually a Fuse. All that (including the fuse) is present in the Newton R3 600W.

This PSU uses a combination of the CM6901 and CM6502 controlers. The CM6502 takes care of the PFC Booster. The PFC Booster makes use of a SiC Diode (precise type unknown, since the case of our sample has been scrached; only "cref" can be read). The APFC Capacitor is from the japanese high end manufacturer Nippon Chemi-Con (KMR Series; 105°C; 390uF; 400V). Both the diode and especially the capacitor can be considered as high end. The CM6901 controls the LLC resonance converter. The main converter only generates 12V (3.3 and 5V are generated from 12V). Many modern PSU's use this topology. Four IPP023N04 (40V, 0.0023 Ohm, 90A) do the secondary side rectyfication. For an output power of only 600W this design is rock solid. The design could easily be upscaled by using better components, which are suitable for higher output powers. The secondary side filtering is mainly done by capacitors from CapXon and Nippon Chemi-Con.
