With Ivy Bridge-E, Intel is sending a new high-end desktop CPU into the race for the fastet CPU, a desktop users money can buy. Based on the Ivy Bridge architecture and with a turbo clock of 4.0 GHz this CPU is trying to convince potential customers, that it is upgrade time. Is Intel really going to succeed?

Ivy Bridge-E
At launch Intel presents three new Ivy Bridge-E CPUs. There is a Core i7-4960X, a Core i7-4930K and a Core i7-4820K. The first is the extreme model which comes with 15 Megabyte of shared L3-Cache and an open multiplier. The
4930K ships with twelve Megabyte of cache and also an open multiplier. When it
comes to the Core i7-4820K there were some more changes compared to the
predecessor. Whereas the Core i7-3820 was a non-K CPU, which meant that it
didn't feature an open multiplier, the 4820K will allow overclocking via
multiplier. This as well as the fact, that there is a price tag of a about 300
US-Dollar makes the entry level HEDT Intel CPU the most interesting model in the
new line-up. Therefore it's a pity that we haven't had this CPU for testing yet.
In direct comparison with the predecessor Sandy
Bridge-E, the new Ivy Bridge-E processors die is significantly smaller. If you
start searching for reasons, then you might remember, that before the launch
there were lots of rumors, that said, the new Ivy Bridge-E CPU's will be based
on a native hexacore design. It turns out these rumors were actually true. When
Sandy Bridge-E was released about two years ago, there were quite a few people
complaining that it's just a crippled Xeon CPU, where Intel deactivated parts of
the cache as well as two cores. Ivy Bridge-E is not such a cripple CPU anymore,
which is creating hope for overclockers, who have a tendency to believe in the
golden sample. When it comes to size, and when we look at the sheer numbers, we
see that the old CPU measured 435 mm
2 whereas the new one is only
257mm
2. Also the transistor count went down drastically from 2.26
billion to 1.86 billion.
And then there was the chipset. For end users it's basically
a very good thing when a chip manufacturer such as Intel or AMD decides to not
change the socket. Apparently, for obvious reasons. But still, the X79 has two
issues. Already when it came out, people were complaining that two native SATA 6
Gbps ports are just not enough and apart from that there are only native USB 2.0
ports. These days, competition for Intel's X79 chipset is even tougher. With the
Z87 chipset out there available in the market, there is a cheaper part, that
offers native USB 3.0 ports as well as six SATA 6 Gbps ports. Looking at this
circumstance from the perspective of somebody who just spent 1000 US-Dollar for
a CPU and at least 300 US-Dollar for a board, to get a state of the art system,
this is quite an odd situation - to put it in nice words. We would really love
to see Intel further keeping the LGA2011 socket, but upgrading the X79 chipset.
Overall the only change you can find with Ivy Bridge-E is the fact, that the
CPU's memory controller officially supports DDR3-1866 compared to DDR3-1600 you
got with Sandy Bridge-E. Other than that no changes have been made. There are
still 40 PCI-Express 3.0 lanes.

3DMark 06
3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using
really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the
graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in
recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the
graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

Cinebench
The test procedure consists of two
main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main
processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene
makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient
occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the
benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On
computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate
multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a
second test using all available CPU power.

Crysis DirectX10
Crysis is still one of the games which has very high
system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API,
High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion
Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If
we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence
compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

Street Fighter4
Street Fighter 4 comes
with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play.
At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see
CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more
important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

Power consumption
Hereby we take the
power consumption under load as well as idle. To generate a load situation we
use SiSoft Sandra's Burn-In Module and measure the whole systems power
consumption. The values we take when the System just booted into Windows and the
load drops.

Conclusion
With Ivy
Brdige-E Intel offers an upgrade for the existing socket LGA2011 platform. In
this case the manufacturer doesn't force you to buy an entirely new platform,
which is actually a good thing, that helps you save quite some money.
Unfortunately the X79 chipsatz still offers only two native SATA 6 Gbps ports,
which is just not what you want, when you can have a cheaper Z87 platform, that
offers six SATA 6 Gbps ports. Apart from that the Core i7-4960X is by far not
even ten percent faster than it's predecessor Core i7-3960X. In fact, only in
WinRAR that Core i7-4960X was able to excel. So in other words, Intel didn't
pull any magic tricks with Ivy Bridge-E when it comes to performance. In this
case, slowly but certainly, the question is starting to arise, if this new Core
i7-4960X would really be worth spending more than 900 Euro. Before we come to
this, let's first talk about power consumption. When it comes to high-end
desktop CPU's - in our opinion - this is a point which isn't too important. When
you're willing to spend a small fortune on a CPU, then you can certainly afford
the electricity bill at the end of the month. Still, when it comes to idle power
consumption the values are almost 50 Watts lower than what we got testing the
predecessor. Under load things look a bit different, since the Core i7-4960X,
was the one CPU that needed the most power under these conditinos. It was a
whopping 258 Watt.
Something else that is worth mentioning - unfortunately - is the memory
controller. According to specs it should be capable of running memory at DDR3-1866. In
our case, even at 1.75 volt, instead of the usual 1.65 volt, we had to fight
with stability issues, which is why we decided to test this CPU with the memory
set to DDR3-1600. From our point of view this is disappointing news, but it
could be that we got a very bad sample, where the integrated memory controller
has an issue.
Finally, we made it to the point where we talk about pricing and if this CPU
is worth the money it costs. If you already own a Sandy Bridge-E processor,
there is no need for an upgrade. If you plan buying a new system, which should
feature the fastest CPU money can buy, then the Core i7-4960X is the only option
you have. It's that simple.
