Gigabyte X99-UD4 Review
Category : X99
Published by Hiwa Pouri on 03.09.14
With the X99-UD4, Gigabyte already has an X99 motherboard ready for launch day and this particular model comes with a reasonable feature mix and very attractive price. It doesn't take long until you see that Gigabyte did not overexaggerate equipping this board with additional chips, which is something that's reflected in the price. Maybe Gigabyte is capable of scoring big with this motherboard, since it looks like the X99-UD4 has the potiential to set the benchmark for entry-level X99 motherboards.

With the launch of X99 also Gigabyte is amongst the few motherboard makers, which have a complete line-up ready at launch day. The X99-UD4 is their entry level offer and considering it's a X99 HEDT motherboard the price is actually in the "affordable range".

Features

Digital Power Design

Since quite some time Gigabyte equips its boards with digital power designs. Using Gigabyte's own tuning software you can for example change voltages in Windows. As you might expect it from a high-end motherboard, there are only high quality parts used for the power design.

AMP-UP Audio

Gigabyte equipped this board with their AMP-UP audio solution. In this case you get a Realtek ALC 1150 audio chip, that has been combined with an EMI shield. Apart from that the audio solution has been isolated from the rest of the motherboard in order to reduce interference even further. Furthermore there are also high quality capacitors next to the audio chip, helping to provide richer sound.

SATA Express

SATA Express is a new port for storage devices that basically combines two SATA connectors and bundles them. Each SATA Express port has been wired using two PCI Express Gen2 lanes offering a total of 10 Gbps bandwidth. Compared to SATA-III with 6 Gbps bandwidth this is quite an improvement.

M.2 Support

The new Gigabyte X99-UD4 motherboard features an M.2 slot. This motherboard can be equipped with an SSD in M.2 format and it is wired directly to the X99 PCH via two PCI Express lanes, therefore offering x4 bandwidth. In other words up to 10 Gbps can be pushed over the bus through this slot.

Layout

The Gigabyte X99-UD4 comes with an ATX form factor, which makes the board fit in the vast majority of cases. Having a look at the design reveals, there is a black matte PCB and there are four grey DIMM slots. As soon as the board is up and running you will notice the orange backlight with the PCH cooler, which actually looks pretty decent. On another note you can have a look at the sheer number of features and additional chips on this motherboard and you will notice, that there aren't too many. On one hand, this is helping keep the board clean and on the other hand this is one of the cheapest X99 boards you can buy.

Gigabyte equipped the X99-UD with a digital 6+4 phase power design. There is a total of six phases to stably supply the CPU with power and there are Chips from International Rectifier controling the signals. In the case of the DIMM slots there are four more phases which are also controlled by chips from International Rectifier.

Totally you'll find eight DIMM-slots on the Gigabyte X99-UD4. Officially supported are memory clock speeds of up to DDR4-3000MHz and more. If all the slots are equipped with 8 Gigabyte modules, you can have a maximum of 64 Gigabyte memory on this motherboard. There is also enough space around the CPU socket, to install large CPU coolers.

Southbridge as well as current converters are being held at adequate temperatures via two passive cooling blocks. Booth blocks are rather well-sized and they've been connected to eachother using a heatpipe. Apart from that the cooling blocks have been very well manufactured. On top of that, the PCH cooler received a backlight, which in our opinion looks really nice.

Connectors and I/O

Totally Gigabyte equipped the X99-UD4 with ten angled SATA ports, which is enough for every gaming rig, overclocking setup or workstation. Two SATA ports can be combined to a SATA-Express connector offering additional flexibility. All the SATA ports support 6Gbps bandwidth and they've been natively wired to the PCH. Apart from that, in order to enhance storage flexibility even further there are two M.2 slots located inbetween the second and the third PCIe x16 slot.
What you won't find are practical onboard power- and reset-buttons as well as a debug LED. If you need to reset the BIOS you need to use a jumper, since there is not button to do the job. As for the PCIe connectors with this motherboard you get four PCIe 16x Gen 3.0 slots and three PCIe x1 slots.

Totally you'll find five fan headers on the Gigabyte X99-UD4 which is more than enough to provide even an overclocking rig or a high-end gaming machine with plenty of fresh air. What's practical is the fact, that those are all 4-pin connectors, which allow for fan speed control from within BIOS or Windows.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel Gigabyte equipped the X99-UD4 with five USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports and one Gigabit ethernet port. Furthermore there is an analogue audio panel as well as a digital audio out and a bracket to hold WiFi antennas.

BIOS

The most recent version of Gigabyte's UEFI BIOS presents itself with an attractive design. When entering the BIOS, the overview screen you get to see is overloaded and apart from that we would expect it features a reasonable contrast between background and writings everywhere. Nevertheless, the basic structure behind the complex design can be understood at the first glance. Usually these splash screens are here to offer a starting point for beginners, but the sheer amount of information will scare less experienced users off. What is practical about the new UEFI BIOS - especially for beginners - is that the mouse can be used too, to browse the different tabs.

If you wish back the good old times, where you were racing through the menus hammering up and down arrows as well as the enter key ridiculously fast, you just have to press F2 and there you go. Since this motherboard features a very solid power design it is suitable for both gaming and high overclocking. In the BIOS you will soon notice, there are Gigabyte's usual options, which allow for altering virtually anything when it comes to overclocking. Overall, there is certainly no lack of options in this BIOS.

Conclusion

Allgemein   + -
The X99-UD4 is Gigabytes interpretation of an Intel X99 based entry-level motherboard. This board scores with a very nice design, whereas the black PCB as well as the black and orange heatsinks look strikingly good, where the backlight is adding to that. Furthermore there are no less than four PCI Express x16 slots. Even the delivery is convincing, you will find everything you need to setup your new board appropriately and we were actually surprise to see that many SLI bridges in the delivery.   - Design

- Standard ATX

Layout   + -
Generally the Gigabyte X99-UD4's layout has been well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors. Unfortunately there are no practical power- and reset-buttons and also a clr_CMOS button is missing. In total there are four PCI Express x16 slots, which have been well placed, which means it's possible to build a quad SLI setup using this motherboard. In between the second and the third PCIe x16 slot there are two M.2 x2 slots. It's nice to have two of these but we would have preferred to find one M.2 x4 slot.   - Angled SATA connectors - 4 x Full-Size PCI Express x16
- Space around the CPU socket - 2 x M.2
- No Power/Reset-Button onboard
- No Debug display

Performance   + -
Having a closer look at the average performance results, we see the X99-UD4 scores fourth out of the five boards we've tested so far. We're really hoping Gigabyte is going to invest more time into optimizing the BIOS to a point where the X99-UD4 becomes fully capable of keeping up with the competition. On another note we also had a look at power consumption and noted that this is quite an energy efficient X99 board.   - Power Consumption  - SiSoft Sandra

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
As you might have expected from Gigabyte, you get an excellent BIOS which offers not only a boatload of tuning and tweaking options but is also very easy to use. Especially with the entry screen with which Gigabyte is trying and also succeeding to add elements which make the BIOS much easier to use for unexperienced users as well.   - Clear arrangement - Design

Recommendation   + -
With the X99-UD4, Gigabyte created a good looking board, which features an unbeatable price tag. We find this board at Geizhals.at for 194 Euro and over at Newegg they're asking 258.99 US-Dollar for it (shipping included but without taxes). If you are looking an X99 motherobard with excellent price/performance ratio, then the Gigabyte X99-UD4 is the answer.   - Enthusiast
