Thermalright Silver Arrow IB-E Review
Category : Aircooling
Published by Marc Büchel on 21.10.14
With the Silver Arrow IB-E, Thermalright has an impressive cooler in its portfolio. Equipped with the right fans this cooler wheighs more than one kilogram. This monster offers no less than eight heatpipes and they all have a diameter of six millimeter. At this point we now want to know what this giant cooler can do in the case of sheer cooling performance as well as noise level.
Today we're having a close look at Thermalright's massive Silver Arrow IB-E.
This is the latest incarnation of something that is a pure beast of an
aircooler. As we already mentioned Thermalright equipped this massive block with
a total of eight heatpipes and they all measure six millimeter in diameter. This
should definitely be plenty to offer some insane performance at a very
reasonable noise level.
The Silver Arrow
IB-E from Thermalright is a classical twin-tower cooler. This type of cooler comes with the advantage that
manufacturers can build blocks that offer a large surface area. The disadvantage
compared to down-draft coolers
is there is no direct airstream towards the motherboard and therefore onboard
components get a little hotter. Thermalright
manufacturs their Silver Arrow SB-E from aluminium and copper. You can find a
nickel-plated copper base plate through which all the eight heatpipes got
routed. The heatpipes received the same treatment like the base plate which
means they've also been nickel-plated. In the case of the fins we count 45
aluminum sheets, which have been soldered to the heatpipes.
We couldn't find any manufacturing mistakes on our sample, which means build
quality is on an excellent level. The heatpipes have a concave shape, which
helps increasing the efficiency of an attached fan. Regarding the design of the
fins Thermalright chose a sawtooth design at the edges of each fin. We also like
the detail that Thermalright is equipping the heatpipes with stylish caps.

Installation
Thermalright ships their
Silver Arrow IB-E with mounting kits that are compatible to most common
Intel and AMD sockets. Basically mounting the cooler is simple but still we'd
recommend to consult the manual since there are quite a few pieces which need to
be put together before the cooler can actually be mounted.
On these pictures you can clearly see that the Silver Arrow IB-E is a montser.
Nevertheless if you choose to equip the cooler with two fans it is easily
possible to install memory with big heatspreaders in the first DIMM slot. Should
you equip the Silver Arrow with three fans, then you'll have to use low profile
memory modules.

To measure the cooling capacity we took temperatures in idle and load
with the fans at 7 and 12 V. The idle temperature represents the lowest
temperature hit by the processor package after 10 minutes in idle. The load temperature is
the highest temperature hit by the processor after one pass of wPrime v2.10. The
wPrime test takes 4 minutes and puts load on all 8 threads.
Room temperature is at 25°C.

At this point we plugged the fan(s) to the motherboard CPU fan header and let the
motherboard take care of fan speeds. In other words the motherboard will
adjust the fan speed via PWM signal according to CPU temperature. The idle
temperature is the lowest temperature hit by the processor after 10
minutes in idle. The load temperature is the highest temperature hit by the
processor after one pass of wPrime v2.10. The
wPrime test takes 4 minutes puts load on all 8 threads.
Room temperature is 25°C.

Decibel meter (Voltcraft SL-200) has been placed 1 meter away from the
cooler. Measurements are conducted in a quiet room, where there are no other noise source. 32 dBA is the lowest
we can get in our room. Also here
the measurements are conducted at lowest and highest fan speeds in idle and
under load respectively.

Conclusion
General |

With the Silver Arrow IB-E, Thermalright shows a remarkable cooler. In terms of cooling capacity this
particular model has been able to quite easily keep up with the the other
powerful competitors we've tested so far. It's not
only the performance that is on a very high level, also the build qulity
of the Silver Arrow IB-E is excellent. We do appreciate it when
manufacturers have an eye for details. In this case we're for example
talking about the finisher caps at the ends of the heatpipes. |

Installation |

The
installation process is easy and you can mount the cooler quickly.
Nevertheless we didn't want to install it without consulting the manual.
Another thing which is important to us is the fact that this cooler is
compatible with all recent sockets from Intel and AMD.

When it comes to performance, the Thermalright
Silver Arrow IB-E is capable enough to keep todays CPUs at very reasonable
temperatures. In this case it doesn't matter if you look at
temperatures with the fan at 12V, 7V or in PWM mode. Apart from
temperatures we also have a look at noise levels. Despite the fact, that
the fans rotate comparably slow this isn't one of the most silent
coolers we've had for testing. We would appreciate if this cooler was
inaudible, especially in idle conditions. |
