With the GTX 980 Gaming 4G, MSI has a Maxwell based graphics card in their portfolio, which features a rather high factory overclocking and apart from that there is the brand new Twin Frozr V cooler. MSI is combining a custom PCB with a custom cooler in order to allow for great overclocking potential and we're really curious to find out what this beast can do.
Presentation
The MSI GeForce GTX 980 Gaming 4G was amongst the very most anticipated GTX
980 graphics cards. When the manufacturer communicated that there will not be a
Lightning version of the GTX 980 expectations on the this particular card
skyrocketed. In the past the receipe for the MSI's Gaming cards was actually
pretty simple, since there was a reference PCB and a custom cooler. With the GTX
980 Gaming 4G this appears to have changed radically, since there is a custom
PCB, which is by far closer to a Lightning card than to a NVIDIA reference
design. Apart from that there is the latest incarnation of MSI's Twin Frozr
cooler, which is meanwhile available in version V. Overall it sound like MSI has
quite a weapon ready and we're sure that it won't just be firing blanks.
MSI provided the GTX 980 Gaming 4G with a really steep factory overclock.
This GPU on this particular card is set to run a 1216 MHz base clock and a
whopping 1317 MHz boost clock. In the case of the maximum boost clock, which is
actually achieved while gaming we see our sample running at 1354 MHz. The clock
speeds we're only lower when we were running Furmark and it this case the card
was still capable of pushing out 1342 MHz. If you keep in mind, that NVIDIA's
reference card runs 1126 MHz base clock and 1216 MHz boost clock you see that
MSI's maximum boost clock is more than 11 percent higher and this is going to
make for a well measurable difference.
Unfortunately MSI did not overclock the 4GB of GDDR5 memory although there is
quite some potential slumbering in the chips the maker is using they're set to
run at 1'753 MHz (7'012 MHz effective).

The card
As noted earlier, the GTX 980 Gaming 4G graphics card
features MSI's famous Twin Frozr V cooler with a total of four heatpipes,
where three measure 8mm and one comes with a diameter of 6mm. Apart from that,
there are two 100mm fans which cool the large heatsink
connected to the nickel-plated copper base plate.
As a part of the MSI Gaming series, the this particular cooler comes with a red on black color scheme and the overall build quality of the cooler is
just great.
The MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G graphics card, or to be precise our sample
of it, allowed a maximum stable overclock of 1'600 MHz for the GPU and 2'197 MHz
on the memory side. To determine stability we used 3DMark. With these clocks we had to feed the GPU with 1.21 Volts and the
memory ran at stock voltages.
Like most of MSI' recent high-end cards the PCB has been completely reworked
and the power design beefed-up. The custom PCB features 10+2+1-phase design. In
this case then phases are taking care of a stable current supply to the GPU, two
phases take care of the memory and an additional phase is in charge of PLL.
Looking for the voltage regulation chip we find an NCP81174 for the GPU, an
INA3221 for the PLL and an APL1117 for the memory. In case of the GPU MSI is
using high quality SFC phases.
The memory chips used are made by Samsung and carry the model number
K4G41325FC-HC28. They are specified to run at 1'750 MHz (7'000 MHz effective).

Delivery
MSI ships the GTX 980 Gaming 4G well bolstered in a foam made mold.
Bundled with the graphics card there is a user guide, a driver CD that
includes the overclocking tool MSI Afterburner too, one power converter (6-pin to 8-pin) and a DVI to VGA adaptor. Unfortunately
there is no SLI bridge, which is something we would have really liked to find.

With the GTX 980 Gaming 4G, MSI
comes up with a very interesting and overall excellent product. As a part of the
MSI Gaming series, the GTX 980 Gaming 4G features a
neat looking red and black color scheme and comes paired with the
excellent Twin Frozr V cooler. Although it's not the one GTX 980 with
the highest
factory-overclocking, it certainly
has its charms and its 3D performance is very good. If we had a wish
free than we would love to see a richer bundle. |

The raw cooling performance with this card is
very good. With their Twin Frozr V MSI have an excellent cooler, and
it simply can't be compared
to the reference cooler in no way as this is a completely
different animal.
In idle the card is inaudible, with the fans not even spinning and under load
we consider the card still very silent. |

Overall, the 3D performance is good but
as said previously, performance could have easily been improved by
additionally overclocking the memory. Nevertheless this is complaining
on a very high level, since this is one of the fastest GTX 980 graphics
cards money can buy these days.
A closer look at power consumption reveals that the GTX 980 Gaming 4G
draws a bit more power in idle than the other GTX 980 cards we've had
for review so far , but since we're talking about very few watts this
does not have a negative impact overall. |

has a custom GTX 980 in its portfolio, which is simply a great piece of
hardware. Should you be looking for a GTX 980 with a truly great cooler,
high factory overclocking and good design, then this card is just
excellent. Checking prices we find that this card retails at 551 Euro
these days and for that price it is one of the more affordable custom
GTX 980 cards. |
