Tyon, the latest high-end gaming mouse from ROCCAT, features 16 programmable buttons and a laser sensor able to reach up to 8200DPI. In this new model ROCCAT adds few new features like two new exclusive buttons specifically designed for FPS gamers. At first glance at the ROCCAT Tyon quickly shows that this is a harmonius and ergonomically shaped gaming mouse. This mouse has been built to fulfil the needs of right-handed people. In addition to that, the ROCCAT Tyon features a very grippy surface with a dark green/black matte finish. The materials used are of excellent quality, and even the softouch surface is well made and very comfortable. At the back of the Tyon there is the ROCCAT logo while the left profile features the printed name of the company. The central part of the mouse is made from softtouch material while the side parts share a different grip.
The ROCCAT Tyon features no less than 16 buttons and they are all well placed and easy to reach. Unlike other manufacturers, ROCCAT did not place too many buttons on the top of the mouse but only a dorsal two-way fin, very easy to access since it is not necessary to actually lift the palm of your hand in order to reach it. Another pair of buttons are placed at the front part of the mouse, both on left and right side. If the hand rests entirely on the shape of the Tyon, even the thumb has a dedicated area surrounded by four buttons.
The strength of the Tyon is definitely the innovative two-way joystick placed on the left side called the "X-Celerator" and accessible by your thumb. This particular switch is designed for the FPS and for games that require you to drive any sort of vehicle.
Like other products from ROCCAT, the TYON also implements the RAD technology and the ROCCAT Talk FX.

Back

ROCCAT decided to equip the Tyon with a Pro-Aim R3 sensor. The maximum resolution is 8200 DPI, which is more than enough for any kind of gamer. The laser sensor is placed at the center and if you are looking for additonal weight, you will be disappointed, since there aren't any. Netto weight of this mouse is 126g, which puts it a middleweight category. ROCCAT decided to provide the Tyon with big glide pads, which are positioned in a symmetrical manner. Furthermore, the glide pads are made from teflon, which means these will definitely last a very long time. A closer look at the cable reveals that it has been braided and the plug shows the model of the product.

Software

ROCCAT did not include the software in the bundle. In this case you first have to go to the manufacturers website in order to download the latest version. Once that is done, and once you installed it properly, you will see that the software is very easy to use, but also offers quite an extensive amount of functions. The page "Main Control" lets you manage the five profiles that can be stored directly on the mouse. For each profile you can adjust the sensitivity, scrolling, tilt, the speed of the double click and assign 5 different levels of resolution.

On the "Button Assignment" tab you can set the button function and configure the Easy-Shift which allows you to simultaneously press two buttons, allowing you to double the number of programmable keys available. In the following tabs you can adjust the sensitivity of the X and Y axes, the backlight RGB and then calibrate the sensor in relation to your mat.

Conclusion

General + -
ROCCAT Tyon is a very solid product and overall we were impressed by the build quality as well as the shape of the mouse. The wheel and the base, with an independent backlight RGB, are well done and pleasant to see, making the Tyon a rather unique gaming mouse. Build quality is excellent and all the materials are perfect. With this model, ROCCAT introduces some new aspects and special features like dorsal fin and a mono-axis joystick for your thumb. The only downside might be the weight since 126 grams may be a bit too heavy for some users.   - Design

Performance / Ergonomics   + -
As usual, we used the gaming mouse in both 2D and 3D environments for our tests. After a few days of use with standard office applications we can say that, despite being a gaming mouse, ROCCAT's new gaming mouse behaves very well in those scenarios as well, mostly thanks to its 41 levels of DPI and numerous options that you can change within the software. Also, the gaming experience is very good, and we have used the Tyon with both RTS and FPS games without any problems. Furthermore, we really like the glide pads, which are big, made from teflon and offer excellent gliding performance. In order to test the new features of the Tyon, we decided to give it a spin in Battlefield 4, switching between tanks, helicopters and also jets. The dorsal fin is a great add since it can work like the wheel and you can switch quickly between the objects of your loadout. The X-CELERATOR basically works like an accelerator and a brake or as a zoom-in and zoom-out. In other words, with this switch you can drive or perform many other tasks that otherwise would be limited to the keyboard. Even for daily use, like office or surfing on the web, the X-CELERATOR is very useful since it can be used like a scroll wheel.   - Sensor

- Positioning of the buttons

Software   + -
The ROCCAT software is a pleasant surprise. It is well-structured, easy to use and with a tons of options. You will be able to change the aesthetics as well as all the functional aspects. We particularly liked the Easy-shift function since you can duplicate the amount of buttons on your device.   - Easy to use
- Tons of options

Recommendation / Price   + -
Using Geizhals.eu to check prices, we see that the Tyon has a starting price of about 99€, excluding shipping costs. The product has definitely impressed us, the performance is very good, as well as the ergonomics, the software and the quality of the materials. The price could be a bit steep but we think that is appropriate to the quality and features of this new product frin ROCCAT. If you are looking for a gaming mouse with a clean design and excellent quality, we definitely recommend that you take a look at the Tyon.

Rating
We gave the Tyon from ROCCAT 4.5 out of 5 stars.
