After reviewing several of the latest Intel X99 Express based motherboards we're now putting our hands on ASUS's X99-WS/IPMI workstation motherboard. At a very first look we find the same color scheme, which you also get with ASUS's classic series motherboards, but at this point the similarities already stop. ASUS did a lot of optimizations on this board to make it easier to use in a workstation environment. For example, the CPU socket and the DIMM slots have been rotated by 90 degress and there is an IPMI (Intelligent Platform Managment Interface) interface.

Features

Supreme Power Solutions

On this board ASUS makes use of a power design, which is similar to the one, which can also be found on the vendors classic as well as ROG series products. In the case of the capacitors, there are ones, which feature a lifespan of 12'000 hours. Today this marks the state-of-the-art. To optimized the airflow towards the CPU cooler, ASUS put the power connectors in front of one of the DIMM banks. Even in a server case, there would nothing be interfering with the CPU coolers airflow. Checking the power design further, we find Dr. MOS driver MOSFETs, which allow for lower operating temperature and they help saving space on the PCB.

Crystal Sound 2

With Crystal Sound 2 you get ASUS' interpretation of high quality onboard audio. Supporting up to eight channels, the Crystal Sound 2 solution received shielding from other onboard components. Apart from that there are high quality ELNA capacitors offering as clear as possible audio.

IPMI 2.0

IPMI 2.0 is a collection of standardized interfaces allowing reporting and remote maintenance of server and workstation systems. Thanks to IPMI 2.0 systems can be booted or rebooted remotely. Thanks to the integration of the SNMP protocol status/error reports can be sent out automatically. IPMI 2.0 even allow to remotely access the BIOS of a system.

ASUS OC Socket

ASUS decided to equip this motherboard with their OC Socket. Compared to the reference socket from Intel, the ASUS OC Socket features additinoal pins. ASUS claims, that these pins help maintaining highest possible CPU voltage stability even when a CPU is being overclocked to more than 5.0 GHz. In other words there is a lower voltage drop when you’re feeding HEDT or server CPUs with higher voltages at very high clock speeds. This is especially helpful if you do extreme overclocking, since in this case voltage drops can cause instability. Basically the more stable the current and voltage supply are the more likely it becomes to run a CPU at very high frequencies, thus increasing the likelihood to break world records.

Q-Code Logger

Q-Code Logger is a button located in the I/O shield. If a system admin plugs in a USB pen drive and pushes the button, a TXT file is going to be saved, showing all current live sessions. This can be a very practical feature for trouble shooting.

ASUS Dr. Power switch

Once the Dr. Power feature is activated the power supplies current delivery is being monitored. If there should be any voltage fluctuation, Dr. Power will notify the user to take appropriate action, before the system automatically restarts as a safety precaution.

SATA Express

SATA Express is a new port for storage devices that basically combines two SATA connectors and bundles them. Each SATA Express port has been wired using two PCI Express Gen2 lanes offering a total of 10 Gbps bandwidth. Compared to SATA-III with 6 Gbps bandwidth this is quite an improvement.

M.2 Support

The new X99-WS/IPMI motherboard from ASUS features an M.2 slot which is placed Behind the PCH. This motherboard can be equipped with SSDs in M.2 format and it is wired directly to the X99 PCH via four PCI Express lanes, therefore offering up to 20 Gbps can be pushed over the bus through this slot.

Layout

At a first glance the ASUS X99-WS/IPMI leaves a very good impression with a good looking and clean design. The manufacturer decided to go for a combination of black and anthracite, which suites nicely and in the end you get an aesthetic looking product with a clean layout. Talking about the layout; it is well thought and there is for example plenty of space around the CPU socket to install large coolers. As we already mentioned the CPU socket as well as the DIMM slots have been rotated by 90° in order to optimize airflow in server cases. The fact that there are SATA connectors which have been angled by 90 degrees allows for an easy installation of oversized graphics cards. Apart of that there are four additional SATA ports at the bottom edge of the motherboard.

The ASUS X99-WS/IPMI comes with a digital 8+4 phase power design, whereas the CPU is backed up by eight phases and the memory by four. Like we've already explained on the features page ASUS is making use of an extensive solution. Furthermore ASUS equips this board with their so called "BlackWing Chokes". Apart from that these chokes can cope with up to 60A per phase. A closer look at the capacitors reveals there are 12K Black Metallic Caps, which have an average life span of 12'000 hours.

Totally you'll find eight DIMM-slots on the ASUS X99-WS/IPMI. Officially supported are DDR4, 3200+(OC) / 3000+(OC) / 2933+(OC) / 2800(OC) / 2400(OC) / 2133 MHz. There is engough space between the DIMM-slots and the CPU socket which means that you wont encounter compatibility problems with big coolers even when you choose to install RAM with big heatspreaders. Also supported are Xtreme Memory Profiles (XMP) in version 2.0.

The PCH on this board is being cooled by a passive cooling block. A closer look at the VRM area where shows that there is another heatsink taking care of adequate cooling. Thanks to the fact, that the new Core i7-5960X as well as Core i7-5930K support a total of 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, there is no need for an additional PLX chip. 40 lanes are sufficient for 4-way setups and there are even 8 lanes left to install for example a powerful PCIe SSD (should there still be space on the board).

Connectors and I/O

ASUS equipped the X99-WS/IPMI with six angled SATA ports as well four straight connectors. All ports offer 6Gbps bandwidth and they've been wired directly to the X99 PCH. Two angled SATA can be used as a SATA Express connector. There is also a M.2 x4 expansion slot, which has been connected through four PCI Express 2.0 lanes. If you decide to use the M.2 slot you should keep in mind, that the third full-size PCI Express slot will be deactivated. Overall there is good storage flexibility with this motherboard is excellent and therefore workstations as well as enthusiast and gaming builds can be equipped with plenty of drives. We always like it when we find practical onboard power- and reset-buttons as well as a debug LED. ASUS also equips this board with two USB 3.0 connectors as well as two USB 2.0 headers.

You find seven fan headers on the ASUS X99-WS/IPMI, which is more than enough, to provide a well equipped high-end system or also a workstation with fresh air. The fan headers are located around the CPU socket as well as spread over the motherboard. We love to see that only 4 pins headers have been used, which means that fan speeds can be controled from within BIOS or Windows.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the I/O panel, ASUS equipped the X99-WS/IPMI with four USB 3.0/2.0 ports, two USB 2.0/1.1 ports, two gigabit ethernet ports, and one managment LAN port as well as an optical out and an analogue audio panel. Furtheremore you'll also find a clear CMOS-reset and Q-Code Logger button.

BIOS

ASUS was the first motherboard manufacturer that introduced graphical UEFI BIOS back in the days and since that day not much has changed. There have been some minor changes here and there but ASUS didn't touch the basic layout or Design. Since it's great anyway since day one, why should they. The interface is easy to understand and also childrens play to use. There are also quite a few additional settings to squeeze the last bit of performance out of the board.

Conclusion

Allgemein   + -
With the X99-WS/IPMI ASUS has a solid workstation motherboard in it's portfolio. To improve the airflow in server enclosures, the CPU socket and the DIMM slots have been rotated by 90°. Apart from that there is an IPMI 2.0 management engine, which allow for full remote control/maintenance of systems based on this board. When it comes to X99 standard features, this is a fully fledged high-end product, offering five PCI Express x16 slots as well as M.2, ten SATA ports and support for SATA Express.   - Design
- Layout
- not enough USB3.0 and USB 2.0 ports

Layout   + -
The ASUS X99-WS/IPMI's layout has been very well thought. Once more practical are angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Apart from that the placement of the PCI-Express x16 slots is very well chosen. There is a total of five PCI Express slots, and between the second and the third PCI Express x16 slot there is a M.2 x4 slot. Apart from that we find one SATA Express connector on this board.   - Angled SATA connectors - 2 x PCI Express x1
- SATA Express - Power/Reset-Button onboard
- Debug display
- Space around the CPU socket - M.2 x4

Performance   + -
Let's have a closer look at overall 3D performance. Calculating the average of all 3D benchmarks we ran, we see that this board comes in fourth in our comparison tables. Concerning the average of all 2D benchmarks we ran, this board leaves all other models behind. Overall this board does very well when it comes to performance in general. On another note we had a look at power consumption and it turns out that this board burns a bit more power than the average. Keeping in mind there is for example the additional IPMI management chip as well as other features this explains the increased demand for power.   - Power consumption - FireStrike Extreme

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
The BIOS of the X99-WS/IPMI is identical from what you get with other recent ASUS motherboards these days and the only difference is the backgound color. This means the basic structure has not been changed. Overall the structure is easy to understand and even if you're not an experienced user you will find the settings you'd like to change quickly.   - Clear arrangement - Sheer amount of options

Recommendation   + -
Checking Geizhals we found this board listed for 525 Euro, which makes it very expensive compared to other X99 motherboards. The workstation features like IPMI 2.0 as well as the completely reworked layout appear to be adding a lot to the final retail price. Nevertheless, this is an excellent product, which is perfectly suitable for any kind of highly stable and excellently performing workstation.   - Workstation

- Enthusiast

Rating
We give the ASUS X99-WS/IPMI very good 4.5 out of 5 stars.
