With the Radeon 4850 AMD/ATI is holder of the first place when it comes down to midrange graphic cards. Meanwhile the first models with 1 GByte of memory are on the market and they should be able to cope even better with high resolutions.
The Gigabyte GV-R485OC-1GB comes already overclocked to 700 MHz which means 75 MHz more than the reference models come with.
On the following pages we will show what impact a 75 MHz higher clock and 512 MByte more memory will have.

The Gigabyte GV-R485OC-1GH is based on an all own PCB. As a cooler Gigabyte took a Zalman VF830 with two heatpipes which does not cool the memory chips. The additional power the GV-R485OC-1GH gets via a 6-pin connector.
The measures 24.5 cm lenghtwise and it should therefore be no problem to put it into a small computer case. At the slot plate one can find to Dual-Link DVI-I ports (HDCP compatible) and one HDTV connector. All in vain you are looking for a HDMI- or a display-port-connector.

ConclusionIn recent games and resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 there is nearly no difference. One really needs high resolutions to see a performance increase in benchmarks. Therefore you can ask yourself it the 1 GByte model makes sense or not because when you want to play very high resolutions you would preferably buy a 4870 oder a 4870 X2.
Because of the fact the Gigabyte model come overclocked from the factory, the performance in general is good. Also the Zalman cooler is quiet and therefore effecient. With a price of CHF 259.- the difference to the 512 MByte Model isn't that big. So if you want to buy yourself an all new card the Gigabyte GV-R485OC-1GH should be considered but if you plan to upgrade your existing 512 MByte 4850 to play very high resolutions you should go for a 4870 oder 4870 X2.
