Layout and I/O

The layout is clearly arranged. All connectors are well placed and accessible. Installing new hardware is very convenient because on the whole board there is plenty of space around the bigger components. With its 90 degree angled SATA connectors ASUS lets the you arrange its cables neatly (A) and the onboard power- and reset button are very practical (B).

Original Image

For the first time on a mainstream mainboard you can find two (C) SAS connectors (Serial Attached SCSI) for high performance mass storage media. Altogether there are six memory slot on the P6T Deluxe which officially support DDR3-1066/1333 with up to 12 GByte/s transferrate. If you want to overclock the memory subsystem ASUS says DDR3-1600 is also possible.

It takes some time until you have a good overview of all the settings ASUS delivers. The many different voltage settings and the possibility to save different BIOS configurations a very interesting. This makes it possible to save an overclocking- and a standard profile. Now it is also possible to change all the settings in the Windows tool ASUS TurboV.

With our overclocking attempts we are looking for the highest possible Busclock. As a stabilitytest we use SuperPI 1.5 which has to run a 32M calculation. Therefore the results can be considered as stable.

 Intel I7 965 Overclocked
23 x 184MHz = 4.22 GHz, VCore 1.53V
Intel I7 965 Standard
14 x 133MHz = 3.2 GHz, VCore 1.20V
SuperPI 1.5 32M9m 28.636s11m 46.321s

Original Image

With the corresponding BIOS settings we were able to clock the CPU to 4.2 GHz and the board to a BCKL of 183 MHz. Therefore the CPU needed 1.53 volts and a multiplyer of 23.

Conclusion

With the P6T Deluxe OC-Palm ASUS presents a mainboard thouroughly designed for PC enthusiasts. The boards performance and stability is on a high level but some numbers a lower than on a Gigabyte GA-EX58 UD5.

The BIOS settings on the other hand are very good, especially the voltage settings are well thought.

The layout is perfect: ideal placed connectors, angled SATA ports, enough space around the components and onboard power- and reset button make it very easy to assemble a system on an ASUS P6T OC-Palm. The attractive equipment - onboard SAS controller and OC-Palm - perfect the already very good package.

In summary we can do the following statement: very good equipment, perfect layout, well thought BIOS as well as very good performance and overclocking abilities make this mainboard an ideal basis for a brandnew Intel Core i7 System.
