With their Trion 150 series, OCZ shows their second generation of drives with TLC NAND. Therefore it's rather obvious that OCZ is about to continue the price wars when it comes to budget SSDs. Looking for the controller we find a chip from Toshiba and we're rather curious to find out how this drive does in our review.

With the Trion 150 OCZ shows their second SSD, which is based on TLC NAND flash memory. The predecessor, the Trion 100, was using 19 nanometer NAND flash memory, wheras the new Trion 150 is now based on 15 nanometer flash. Switching to NAND with a smaller manufacturing process allows a vendor to lower its pricing even further and at the same time realize drives with higher capacity. As you might know, TLC memory chips are capable of storing three bits per cell, whereas MLC can only hold two bits. The increases the capacity per NAND chip and provides the vendor with more headroom regarding pricing as well as capacity.

As with the predecessor also the Trion 150 is using a Toshiba Alishan controller, which goes by the name TC58, or to be even more precise: TC58NC1000GSB-00. Apart from that it has been combined with TH58TET1UDKBAEG NAND flash memory, which, as we already mentioned, is TLC NAND. A closer look at the line-up reveals there have four different models been launched, where there is a 120GB, a 240GB, a 480GB and a 960GB model.

A closer look at the Trion 150's bundle shows clearly that these entry level drives are targeting the entry level segment. Next to the management software SSD Guru, the drives are covered by OCZ's so called Shield Plus warranty. If a customer is under the impression that a drive is defective it can be sent to OCZ. A service technicians will check if the drive is actually damaged or not. Should that be the case, the customer immediately receives a new drive, whereas return shipment costs are being covered by OCZ. In the case of the Trion the Shield Plus warranty last three years.

SSD Guru


SSD Guru is OCZ's management software for their SSDs. As you might have expected it gives you an overview on the drives capacity and it tells you when your SSD is going to be full. Apart from that you also see information on the drives health on the overview page as well as other details. If you'd like you can also dive deeper and check the SMART data yourself. OCZ added some additional information where necessary in the case of SMART data, so it's easy to understand what these values actually describe.
The second tab "Tuner" allows you to do initiate the TRIM command yourself and you can also change the overprovisioning setting. Apart from that, there is also the so called "OS Tuner", where you can choose from the four different settings "Reliability", "Performance", "Capacity" and "Custom".
Using the "Settings" tab, you can select options related to logging or if you want to enable SSD Guru, when your system is booting up. Apart from that there are monitoring options and you can even add proxy related settings.
On the "Maintenance" page OCZ allows you to initiate firmware updates as well as a Secure Erase.
What might be practical too is the "Help" tab. Here you have links to the OCZ Support as well as to OCZ's Support Forum. There is also detailed information on your drive, which you can save easily to you drive, simply by hitting the save button.

Conclusion


Announcement: Despite the circumstance that the rating of a product is based on as many objective facts as possible there are factors which can have an influence on a rating after publication. Every autor may perceive data differently over time whereas one possible reason for example is a deeper background knowledge or understanding of certain processes. Certain unforseen market conditions as well as changes have the potential to render a descision made at a certain point in time obsolete.

With the Trion 150, OCZ launched the sucessor of their Trion 100, which again features very aggressive pricing. On the other hand the pricing also reflects in the performance to a certain extent, althought the 480 Gigabyte model we tested here is definitely no slow drive. We like the fact that OCZ bundles these drives with their Shield Plus warranty plan for three years. Apart from that you also get the SSD Guru software, which is a nice goodie on top.

Having a look at the performance number shows that in sequential write and read the Trion 150 is capable of pushing 534 MB/s over the bus while sequentially writing and 520 MB/s sequentially reading. In terms of random 4k performance this is also not slow drive, performing at 56'000 IOPS for 4k random write and 74'900 IOPS in random read. Also with this drive we have been looking at performance with low queue depthts. Measuring IOPS at QD1 our results were 38'700 IOPS in the case of random write and 6'000 IOPS for random read. Overall performance is on a competitive level regarding the entry level segment.

Last but not least this leaves us talking about the price. The 480 Gigabyte version we've tested here, is already up on Geizhals.at where you can find it listed for as little as 119 Euro. The price per Gigabyte is 0.25 Euro, which is, as we already mentioned, on a very aggressive level. Considering the good warranty plan, this is a very attractively priced drive, which we can recommend.

Recommendation


Should you be looking for an aggressively priced 480 Gigabyte SSD, the Trion 150 can definitely be considered.
