If you take a look at the SSD market, searching for a really powerful product, then you'll definitely take the OCZ IBIS into account. With a throughput of 740 MB/s read and 720 MB/s write this drive shows serious throughput rates and also the claimed 120'000 IOPS are massive.

Technical details

Reading the specs of the IBIS makes the heartbeat of any poweruser go faster. Totally OCZ combined four SandForce 1222 controller on one PCB in a RAID0 configuration. Using a PCI-Express x4 interface and therefore a Pericom PCI-X bridge chip enables OCZ to deliver serious datarates. On the card itself you also find a Silicon Image Sil3124 RAID controller which combines the four single SSDs to one big and fast drive. Furthermore also the installation process becomes quite easy. This is because the RAID controller got it's own BIOS which can be configured however you like it most. If you would wish that you can even alter the RAID0 configuration. What can also be adjusted is the junk size which is an important feature. We decided to use a 128K junk size because of the simple reason that this is the most widely spread configuration in desktop computers.

Probably you noticed that in the specifications you can't find anything about TRIM support. Therefore the four SandForce 1222 controllers have to do garbage collection themselves. Fortunately these controllers are suitable for long term use without supporting the TRIM command. It takes quite a long time until a slight performance degradation takes place.

We think everybody reading this article can imagine the following scenario: You just bought a hard drive which according the specs sheet should transfer 120 MByte/s reading and writing. In the reviews you read about astonishing 110 MByte/s but after you put the drive into you system it feels much slower. The whole story gets even worse when you start a benchmark which does randomread/write of 4 KByte blocks. There you only get two to three MBytes/s.

Because of this we don't want to publish screenshots of standard programs like HD-Tach, HD-Tune, ... we want our tests to be

• reproducible,
• accurate
• meaningful and
• varied

We test with activated caches and NCQ (Native Command Queueing) because they're also activated under daily use. But the data size tested is always at least twice the amount of the memory.

We noticed that the measuring error is constantly within ±2%. Therefore we mention it only here.

Why do we test different block sizes?

It is important to reproduce scenarios of daily usage. Certain parameters need to be variable during the test to make a statement about the product. In our test the parameters are the different block sizes. It defines the size in KBytes which is written/read on the drive during a transaction.

With this method one can test the reading and writing of either small and big files. In a normal personal computer environment you usually don't find many files smaller than 16 KByte. The relative amount of small files is much bigger on a mail or database server. Therefore tests with small block sizes are of interest for database-based applications.

In bigger RAID arrays the hard disk cache is usually disabled and the RAID-Controller takes over the job of caching. Exactly in such setups hard drives need to be very fast when reading or writing small amounts of data. Sequential throughput isn't interesting in this case.

Conclusion

Especially regarding sequential throughput rates the IBIS performed excellent. Reading 256 KByte blocks ended up in a peak of 806 MByte/s. On average the sequential read and write performance was 767 MByte/s and 683 MByte/s which means that for example duplicating a 6 GByte file takes roughly ten seconds.
A closer look at the random rates shows that also at this point the IBIS is a very strong performer. Therefore we were able to measure 67'000 IOPS for 4 KByte blocks. This value as a bit more than half of what the manufacturer states on the website as well as on the devices box but never the less 67k IOPS is a massive number especially for high-end desktop users and enthusiasts. But it comes even better. If we look at the random read performance of 4 KByte blocks then we see almost 120'000 IOPS. This helps pushing the IBIS into a different league if one would like to compare it to "standard" SATA-II drives which deliver about 20'000 IOPS. Working with the IBIS really feels like somebody shifted two gears up.

In the end the IBIS is the perfect drive for demanding enthusiasts who are looking for the maximum performance available. The experience you get with this drive really searches for competition. Futhermore the IBIS is also available in sizes which make it possible to save all your impossible data on this very fast drive but sure, you need plenty of pocket money to enjoy this high-end product.
