With the GTX 580 Matrix Platinum, ASUS has a new flagship in its portfolio. The card has been redesigned from bottom up and comes therefore with a massively extendes power design as well as numerous features which are most interesting for overclockers. ASUS equipped this card also with its DirectCUII cooler which offers efficient and silent cooling even for high-end graphics cards.
On the following pages we will show you the
strenghts and weaknesses of the ASUS GTX 580 Matrix Platinum.

Technical data / specifications
As soon as you
start looking at the ASUS GTX 580 Matrix Platinum you'll notice that almost nothing is
according to NVIDIAs reference design. Taking a closer look at the PCB reveals
that this card has been customized for overclocking from bottom up. Therfore the
card is quite a bit bigger than the reference model. Otherwise ASUS would have run out of space quite quickly with
all the features they chose to equip this card with. Regaring the power
management for ASUS put a whopping 19 phase design onto the GTX 580 Matrix
Platinum which
is a lot even from an extreme overclockers perspective. Concerning quality, ASUS chose copper
super alloy chokes over standard
ones which have a life expectancy which is 2.5 times highger. If you do want to
overclock the card the GPU as well as the memory voltage can be increased.
ASUS chose to equip the GTX 580 Matrix Platinum wirth its very efficient
DirectCUII cooler. Under standard conditions the cooler is subjectively silent
and in our case there wasn't any howling of the fans even under load which means
the card is also silent in games. ASUS decided to give a backlit Matrix logo to
the cooler which can switch color accoring to the load. When there is no load
the logo will be blue and when it's under heavy load it will glow red.

Preview / Delivery
The
ASUS GTX
580 Matrix Platinum comes in quite a big box. The delivery includes a manual, an installation CD, two power adaptors,
one SLI bridge
as well as a DVI-to-VGA-adaptor.

Overclocking
For our overclocking test we were
using GPU TweakIt which allows you to increase voltages and
clock frequencies. Feeding the GPU with the maximum voltage of 1.50 Volt
resulted in a maximum clock speed of 956 MHz on the GPU. Regarding the memory we were able to
squeeze 4'128 MHz out of these chips. The true overclocking potential you'll
discover once you choose to cool this card using liquid nitrogen. For this
purpose you can remove the different protection mechanisms like
overcurrent- and overheat-protection.
Until today we were using ASUS' SmartDoctor utility to overclock their GPUs.
TweakIt is a new tool and it comes with some additional features as well as with
the typical ROG looks which means it fits perfectly the the ROG version of
CPU-z. Regarding additional feateres there is for example the possibility to
record videos. Furthermore GPU clock and GPU voltage are linked by default. This
means that when you increase the voltage the clock speed will be increased too.
Especially for beginners this is a nice feature. With this software you can even
optimize the memory timings. What we also liked, was the monitoring part of the
software which dispalys, GPU temperature, memory temperature, power temperature,
board temperature as well as GPU load. Especially for extreme overclocking this
can be important information.

3DMark Vantage
3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a
recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long:
DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping,
GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to
even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil uses nearly every modern
rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft
Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and
static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been
optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11
ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can
again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the
CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high
resolutions.

Until today the GTX 580
Matrix Platinum is the second fastest GTX 580 graphics card we've ever tested. Already
the
factory overclocking makes it clear that ASUS is aming for the absolute
high-end segment with this card. Furthermore overclockers get a whopping
19 phase power design which is even three phases more than you're
already getting with a GTX 580 Lightning from MSI. Meanwhile ASUS
delivers its overclocking cards with a new utility. TweakIt comes with
quite a few more features than the old SmartDoctor. Especially for
beginners very comfortable and eays is the feature that GPU voltage and
GPU frequency are linked by default. For quick overclockings you'll find
a button on the PCB using which you can set the fan speed to 100
percent. |

If you look at the performance numbers
you'll quickly see that the GTX 580 Matrix Platinum is the second fastest single GPU
card we've ever tested. The only card which is able to outperform the
this card is the MSI GTX 580 Lightning which comes with a stock
frequency that is 16 MHz higher and therefore explains the difference.
Nevertheless it was astonishing to see that the 580 Matrix Platinum set
the highest score in 3DMark 11. |

At
this point we were able to reach 956 MHz GPU and 4'128 MHz memory clock
speed quite effortlessly. This is what you get from a GTX 580 in
general. This cards true potential can be unleashed when it's being
cooled to sub zero temperatures using liquid nitrogen. Otherwise the 19
phases the power design offers don't really have a lot to do. What
proved to be very practical was the new TweakIt software. We liked the
idea of linking GPU voltage and GPU clock speed. Especially for
beginners this a nice feature. Onboard you'll find for example "+" and
"-" buttons which are there to easily increase clock speeds. Furthermore
there also is a button to instantly set fan speed to 100 percent. Last
but no least ASUS equipped this card with a Safe Mode button which
resets all settings you might have previously made. |

Rating |
Because of the fact, that the ASUS
GTX 580 is a faultless high end graphics card which comes at a
competitive price tag which as about CHF 520.- (est. EUR 400.-) we give
it five out of five possible stars. |
