Meanwhile one month has passed since AMD lifted the NDA regarding their latest high end graphics cards: the Radeon HD 7970. We now got a sample from XFX which is called the R7970 Double Dissipation and it ships with a custom cooler. Therefore this card has just partially been designed according to the AMD reference design.

Technical data / specifications
The
XFX R7970 Double Dissipation is a Radeon HD 7970 graphics card, which is based
partially on AMDs reference design. That part that has been entirely built
according to AMDs specifications concerns the PCB. There nothin has been touched
by XFX. What XFX did themselves, that's the cooler. They decided to make use of
a model that is more silent when the fans are at full speed. Like this they gave
away some of the overclocking potential of this card. Overall we think this is a
good descision because most of the users wont overclocker their GPU and they
like it when a component is as silent as possible.
A closer look at the clock speeds reveals that they're no different from the
reference clock. The GPU operates at 925 MHz and the memory at 2'750 MHz
(effective 5'500 MHz). Furthermore there is a total of 3'072 Megabyte of GDDR5
memory that is connected to the GPU via a 384 Bit memory interface. Therefore
the card offers 264'000 Megabyte per second of memory bandwidth.
The GPU itself consists of 4.31 billion transistors and it is being
manufactured at TSMC using their latest 28 nanometer process technology. The
Radeon HD 7970 is AMDs flagship model which is why it comes with all features
activated. This card offers 32 compute units, which means that there are 128
TMUs, 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs. Overall there are 2'048 shader units.

Delivery
About the
delivery we have to say that it is sufficient. The card ships well bolstered,
that it's almost impossible that something breaks during transportation.
Generally spoken one finds everything needed to setup the card correctly. There
is a manual, a driver CD, an mini display port to DVI adaptor and a CrossFire
bridge. What we liked was the Do Not Disturb Door Hanger. Furhtermore there are
additional brochures in the delivery about other products XFX has in its
portfolio.

3DMark 11
3DMark 11 is
Futuremarks latest benchmark for the entire graphical subsystem. The
benchmark uses DirectX 11 and it supports all recent features which can
possibly generate high load on a GPU. Therefore you find tessellation,
compute shader calculations, divers lighting effects and different
depth of filed animations. Following we publish values regarding the
performance preset of 3DMark 11.

3DMark Vantage
3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a
recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long:
DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping,
GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to

Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil uses nearly every modern
rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft
Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and
static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been
optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11
ready. By using the DirectX9 as well as the DirectX10 benchmark we can
again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the
CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high
resolutions.

Undoubtedly
the Radeon HD 7970 is these day single GPU performance king. There
simply isn't a card on the market which can keep up with this one. And
best of all it doesn't matter if you're looking at performance when
using standard clock speeds or overclocking potential. The HD 7970
simply sets a higher benchmark everyhwere. Furthermore the Double
Dissipation cooler XFX is using for their card is a good compromise in
our opinion. Under load the card is quieter than the reference design
but it comes at the cost of some of the overclocking potential. |

What can you say it this point: the Radon HD 7970 really
sets the benchmark for single GPU graphics cards these days and that's
about it. Recent games can be played at the highest resolutions at
maximum detail level absolutely smooth. Even playing on a multi display
setup is no big deal. Pixel accelerator like this one really are
screaming for 4K displays to finally arrive. |
