Samsung officially unveils 960 Pro and 960 EVO SSDs

NVMe M.2 SSD series based on new Polaris controller

During the Samsung SSD Global Summit currently held in South Korea, Samsung has officially unveiled its next-generation M.2 PCIe SSDs, the MLC V-NAND Samsung 960 Pro and the TLC V-NAND Samsung 960 EVO.

Available in M.2 2280 form-factor and with PCIe 3.0 x4 interface with NVMe protocol, the new Samsung 960 Pro and Samsung 960 EVO SSD lineups will be based on Samsung's new Polaris controller, offering different performance and different capacities, due to the fact that they are based on different NAND flash memory.

The high-end Samsung 960 Pro will be available in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities and uses Samsung's 48-layer MLC V-NAND. It will offer sequential read and write performance of up to 3500MB/s and 2100MB/s with 4K random read and write performance peaking at 440k IOPS and 360k IOPS.

The Samsung 960 Pro will offer endurance rating of 1200TB, 800TB and 400TB for 2TB, 1TB and 512GB versions.

The more affordable Samsung 960 EVO lineup will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB capacities and use Samsung's 48-layer TLC V-NAND, offering sequential read and write performance of up to 3200MB/s and 1900MB/s with 4K random read and write performance of up to 380k IOPS and 360k IOPS.

The Samsung 960 EVO will also feature Samsung's "Intelligent TurboWrite" SLC caching technology and come with a SLC cache of 13GB, 22GB and 42GB, which should deal with the drawbacks of the TLC NAND. It will offer endurance rating of 400TB, 200TB and 100TB for 1TB, 500GB and 250GB versions.

The biggest update is the new Samsung Polaris controller, which is a five-core chip. With four cores dedicated to flash management and one core for host communication, this is a significant upgrade from the earlier used Samsung UBX controller. Samsung also did a lot to reduce thermal throttling to the minimum, mostly thanks to a heat-spreader with thin layer of copper as well as certain power efficiency improvements.

The Samsung 960 Pro lineup will be backed by a 5-year warranty and become available in October, with a price set at US $1300 for the 2TB, US $630 for the 1TB and US $330 for the 512GB version.

The Samsung 960 EVO lineup is backed a by shorter 3-year warranty, will also be available next month and comes with a rather affordable price of US $480 for the 1TB, US $250 for the 500GB and US $130 for the 250GB version.
