Memory prices on the rise

40% increase expected

If you’ve been looking for new DRAM for your rig during the past months you might have noticed that prices were on the rise continuously. TrendForce has now published their quarterly report explaining the different factors that contribute to this development.

According to DRAMeXchange the business with “Branded DRAM” drove $12.4 Billion US during 4th quarter last year, while in the 3rd quarter $10.5 Billion US were achieved. One reason for the better result during 4th quarter is the Christmas which is traditionally the strongest season of the year. Due to strong sales numbers in the smartphone business, requiring mobile DRAM, the manufacturers had to reduce the production of PC-DRAM, which led to an increase in price for PC-DRAM modules of 30%. For the current quarter the same increases are expected for server-DRAM.

Although the manufacturers are creating additional capacities, these measures won’t have an effect before the second half of 2017. The undersupply will continue and the issue is going to become even worse resulting in prices rising by 40% until they afterwards go down again.
