Intel drops prices before Ryzen launch

Maybe a smart marketing stunt

Finally, there is competition in the market for desktop processors again. A few days before AMD is going to launch its Ryzen processors Intel is cutting the prices of a number of processors. The price cut is not that significant yet from a consumer’s perspective it really is good to see that the market starts moving.

Nevertheless, looking at the 999 USD price tag the Intel Core i7-6900K features now, it’s still twice as expensive as the Ryzen 7 1800X, which is supposed to compete with this particular Intel chip. If you then keep in mind, that the 329 USD Ryzen 7 1700 processors is not to far off the i7-6900K in terms of performance, the price difference is almost ridiculously big.

Of course especially the high-end Intel CPUs have a more elaborate features. There are for instance 40 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes and most of the high-end X99-based motherboards are equipped with more USB ports and other connectors. This then still makes the Core i7-6850K, i7-6900K and i7-6950X very interesting for high-end workstations. In all other cases AMD’s Ryzen is not just going to be a fierce competitor, we believe it packs the potential to stir up the market.

The guys over at KitGuru have spotted that US-based Microcenter has changed the prices of numerous Intel processors. For example the Core i7-7700K now costs 299 USD, which is about 80 USD less than what it used to be at launch day.

So far Microcenter is the only shop world wide that has lowered the prices on all it’s Intel processors. Therefore it remains to be seen if this is officially backed-up by Intel. If so, then other shops will follow soon. Apart from that it is interesting to see that only 1 CPU can be bought at Microcenter per household, which raises the question if the this could actually be a smart marketing stunt.
