EK Water Blocks shows heatsink for M.2 SSDs

Simple and sleek design

If these days you want to buy a fast SSD you’re going to choose an M.2 drive. Those drives are not just fast, unfortunately some of them also struggle with overheating issues. Already a few months ago, Alphacool introduced their M.2 heatsink which is supposed to help keeping the temperatures of your M.2 SSD low. Meanwhile also EK Water Blocks has come up with a heatsink for M.2 SSD, which goes by the name EK-M.2 NVMe Heatsink.

With their EK-M.2 NVMe Heatsink, EKWB has an aluminum heat spreader in its portfolio which is compatible with drives that fit the M.2-2280 slot. On one side the heat spreader features thermal padding, which should help to evenly remove heat from the SSD. Therefore EK Water Blocks claims that this new heat spreader is capable of keeping the temperatures low and as a result reduce throttling on M.2 PCIe SSDs. According to their tests, the heatsink can improve temperatures by up to 11°C and if there is airflow over going over the heatsink temperatures could fall even lower.

If you’re thinking about buying an M.2 SSD or if you already own one, you might be aware of the throttling issues these drives can face. A few months ago the guys on pugetsystems.com composed an interesting article regarding throttling issues on a Samsung 950 M.2 drive, which they’ve put under heavy workload using three different motherboards. According to their findings a small heat spreader can already be enough to prevent M.2 drives from throttling.

The price of the EK-M.2 NVMe Heatsink - Nickel is set to 12.94€, while the EK-M.2 NVMe Heatsink - Black is listed for 9.96€. They should already be available via the EK Webshop and also at the official reselling partners.
