Silicon wafer makers plan 20% price increase for 2018

PC components will be affected

A coumple of months ago SUMCO, one of the largest silicon wafer producers in the world, was planning to increase prices during this year. In addition the company is planning to increase the price again in 2019. According to the latest rumors, Silicon wafer manufacturers are confirming this price increase.

SUMCO is a Japanese based company and more than 60 percent of the world's silicon wafer supply is produced from them. If the silicon wafer makers will increase the price by 20%, we will be affected as well on PC components like CPU, GPU, DRAM and Flash prices. This week Globalwafers Chairwoman has informed shareholders that the company would raise prices for silicon wafers this year.

The reason behind this price increase is a shortage in 12-inch wafers which are used to build processors, graphics chips and memory. Since the GPU prices have already risen incredible level due to crypto-mining, this additional price increase will make customers rather unhappy. SUMCO has revealed its own price hikes, and according to the company the global will rise to 6.6 million per month by 2020.

Since at the moment the demand outstrips the supply, we hope to see production increase during next years.
