Some 1440p monitors might use 2160p panels

Downscaled panels

According to a recent report from Prad.de, some manufacturers have been using 4K (2160p) panels for their 1440p monitors. The reason behind this move is pretty simple, the 27-inch 4K panel often costs the same price than a 27-inch QHD (1440p) panel. If the reports are true, several manufacturers are offering QHD monitors with 4K capabilities.

At the moment isn't clear what kind of manufacturers are adopting this system. Although this might sound like a free upgrade, we have to mention that the company are locking the resolution with a custom firmware so it wouldn't be possible unlock or upgrade the display. On the market there are several 1440p monitors, curved, with high refresh rate or with FreeSync/G-Sync capabilities.

If you have a 1440p monitor with 60Hz refresh rate, we believe that you might have in your hands a downscaled panel. Another sign might be the pixel size. With native QHD panels, the pixel size is about 0.23mm while on 4K panels the size is set to 0.16mm. If your QHD monitor comes with 0.16mm pixel size, then you might have a downscaled display.

Although we think that is pretty hard to find out what kind of manufacturers are adopting this system, we believe that is still pretty interesting. We are sure that at some point, someone will come up with custom firmware to unlock the resolution. To be fair, it's not the first time that we see custom firmware for displays since there are several monitors that can be overclocked with just some custom profiles.
