Samsung launches four fresh data center SSDs

With SATA and PCIe interfaces

Samsung is upgrading their portfolio regarding the data center drives. Today the blue giant introduced four SSDs, which go by the names 860 DCT, 883 DCT, 983 DCT, and 983 ZET. At the moment Samsung hasn't revealed prices but more information is expected to show up in the next weeks.

The 860 DCT series of SSDs is meant to offer good performance and a lower total cost of ownership compared to hard drives. According to Samsung, the 860 DCT should be a workhorse in content delivery. The drives endurance is rated at 0.2 drive writes per day (DWPD). The 883 DCT should be more solid for critical data compared to the previous model, since it comes with power-loss and end-to-end data protections. Both models feature a SATA interface, 2.5-inch form factor and up to 3.84TB of storage capacity.

The 983 DCT sports a PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe 1.2b interface with U.2 and M.2 connector. Overall this is a really fast drive while performing best in sequential read scenarios. According to Samsung, the 983 DCT should be perfect for real-time analytics. The 983 DCT is available with 960GB and 1.92TB of storage capacity.

Last but not least we have the 983 ZET. This drive is an ultra-high-end NVMe. Samsung is positioning this as a caching drive for SQL databases. The performance level and the endurance are even higher than what you get from the 983 DCT.

Below we’ve added a table containing the detailed specifications.
