Takes the GTX Titan off the performance throne

In addition to organizing the launch day and shipping some samples to members of the press, AMD made sure to put a "couple" of Radeon R9 290X graphics cards in the right overclocking hands as well in order to take the Nvidia GTX Titan off the performance throne at HWBot.

Was not ready in time for the R9 280X

According to our sources, AMD is still working on the R9 280X based on an updated Tahiti GPU, the Tahiti XTL, which should be ready in November and most likely replace the Tahiti XT2, currently used on all Radeon R9 280X graphics cards.

Close to GTX Titan at US $449

While we are still fresh from the official Radeon R9 290X launch, the guys from Videocardz.com stumbled upon a rather interesting table from Overclockers.co.uk that, although blurred, obviously shows the performance of the Radeon R9 290 Hawaii Pro graphics cards in 3DMark and Heaven benchmarks. Quite interesting are the "overclocked" results that puts the cut-down Hawaii GPU above the standard R9 290X and above the Nvidia GTX Titan.

Still with reference design

While most were focused on the upcoming AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card that should officially launch tomorrow, there was not much talk about the R9 290 but now, we can finally see one of the first pictures of it, coming from Club 3D.

All share the same reference design

Just a day before the official rumored launch date set for 24th of October, we have a couple of pictures of the Radeon R9 290X from various add-in-board (AIB) AMD partners. All Radeon R9 290X graphics cards will be based on the reference design and has just a minor difference in GPU clock values.

Coming on 31st of October

While we already know pretty much everything about the AMD Radeon R9 290X, including the fact that it should launch on October 24th and is aiming at US $549 ex. VAT price tag, there is little information on the Radeon R9 290. According to CardPU Forum post spotted by Videocardz.com, the Radeon R9 290 should launch on 31st of October.

Single card at 5760x1080 resolution

Although it is scheduled to officially launch on October 25th we have already had a chance to see leaked results of the Radeon R9 290X graphics in almost every scenario, including its Quiet and Uber modes, CrossfireX and even in overclock conditions and now we finally have a chance to see some performance numbers in Eyefinity, where a single graphics card is forced to render 5760x1080 resolution.

Up to 9.5 percent boost in some scenarios

Although the Windows 8.1 launch did not get much attention as it did not bring any quite important improvements over Windows 8, it appears that AMD's APUs actually like it and can achieve up to 9.5 percent faster performance when running on Windows 8.1 OS.

Both in Uber and Quiet mode

While AMD recently allowed select members of the press to reveal R9 290X 4K/UHD performance previews in Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite but only in Quiet mode, that did not stop users from Chinese forums to reveal both Uber and Quiet mode performance in various games as well as the performance of two R9 290X graphics cards in CrossfireX mode.

Works at 1130MHz

While we have already seen some details regarding the performance of the Radeon R9 290X in both the so called "quiet mode" and the "uber-mode" we now have first notion on how fast should it be when overclocked to 1130MHz.

Posts profit despite weak PC sales

AMD has finally managed to get out of the black and beat most earlier forecasts, according to its Q3 financial report released earlier today. While PC CPU chip sales were down by six percent sequentially and 15 percent year over year, AMD still managed to post a net profit of US $48 million, which is much better than a net loss of US $157 million a year ago.

At 2160p resolution

In addition to recently leaked performance details of the upcoming AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics cards running in so called Quiet Mode and in AMD Gaming Evolved games like Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite, we now have a full list of games at 3840x2160 resolution and in so called Uber-mode, aka. performance mode.

Faster than the GTX 780 at 3840x2160

Earlier this week we have seen some alleged benchmarks of the upcoming AMD Radeon R9 290X that showed its performance potential in 3DMark as well as a few games but now we finally have some 3840x2160 4K/UHD benchmarks that shows the R9 290X in all its glory.

Just not clear when

A report from Fudzilla.com suggest that AMD's Never Settle bundle will be indeed making a comeback to Rx 200 series graphics cards as well but it is still unknown when it will actually go live.

Alleged early review shows up

An alleged early benchmark results for the Radeon R9 290X have finally appeared online showing some results that puts AMD's new flagship against Nvidia's own GTX Titan. According to these, R9 290X is indeed faster than the GTX Titan in some cases but it it definitely faster than the GTX 780.

PCB and GPU in all its glory

Expreview managed to get their hands on HIS-branded reference design AMD Radeon R9 290X graphics card and take it apart showing the cooler, PCB, VRM and the GPU in all its glory.

US $138.93 price tag

It has been already known that AMD plans to release a couple of new socket FM2 APUs based on a Richland core and in addition to A4-6300 dual-core APU, A8-6500T and A10-6700T low-power quad-core APUs it appears that AMD also plans to release the A10-6790K Black Edition APU that appeared for pre-order at ShopBLT.com.

Twice the amount of shader engines

3DCenter.org managed to get their hands on what appears to be an official slide that reveals more info regarding AMD's Hawaii GPU. The slide reveals a lot regarding the actual specifications and gives us insight into differences between the Tahiti and Hawaii GPUs.

Tried it and it works

Since it is already clear that R9 280X is pretty much the standard Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition with a few tweaks in clocks it is possible to make it into the R9 280X via a simple BIOS update.
