Higher production volume in 2018

Prices for DRAM as well as NAND flash memory has been on the rise since almost a year now. Due to the fact that smartphones can require up to 6 Gigabyte of RAM as well as a considerable amount of NAND flash memory supply is still tight.

During the GTC 2017

SK Hynix has shown their first GDDR6 wafers and specifications during the GTC 2017 event. The new standard will allow for twice the bandwidth per pin as well as 10% lower power consumption. So far SK Hynix appears to be ready to produce GDDR6 memory chips using 20nm process technology. These chips offer 16Gbps of bandwidth per pin.

Twice as fast as GDDR5

In the shape of a press release SK Hynix announced that they’re going to launch GDDR6 memory in 2018. The new standard will allow for twice the bandwidth per pin as well as 10% lower power consumption.

First preview available in June

While most people are still switching from a DDR3 to a DDR4 platform, JEDEC consortium is already working on the next standard. Considering that 2014 DDR4 has been introduced on Intel's X99 platform, the standard was first revealed in 2008. Therefore it’s about time that JEDEC announced that they are working on DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5) and NVDIMM-P Design standards moving forward.

40% increase expected

If you’ve been looking for new DRAM for your rig during the past months you might have noticed that prices were on the rise continuously. TrendForce has now published their quarterly report explaining the different factors that contribute to this development.

Due to demand from smartphone market

During the past months we have seen a steady decline on the price of DDR4 memory. Especially in the period from May 2015 to June 2016 the decrease was almost constant month over month. Lately, however, the prices have risen again.

Specification finalized by the end of the year

It appears that DDR memory still has a lot to offer as while it appeared that DDR4 would be the last one we see, DDR5 memory specification should be finalized by the end of the year and start appearing sometime in 2020.

New performance memory lineup

PNY Technologies has announced its new line of Anarchy and Anarchy X DDR3 and DDR4 performance memory modules and kits making a direct move on the performance/gamer memory market.

To offer double the bandwidth of GDDR5

It appears that GDDR5 will still be around of a while and despite the recent implementation of High Bandwidth Memory standard, both AMD an Nvidia might use GDDR5X on its next-generation graphics cards.

Free Microsoft Windows 10 upgrade to blame

According to the latest report, DRAM prices have dropped significantly in the past period mostly due to slow demand in notebook shipments.

Sticking flash NAND on DDR4 memory module

While there have been earlier some attempts on creating an SSD that plugs into a RAM slot, JEDEC has now announced that its has approved the first standards for support of "hybrid" DDR4 memory modules based on non-volatile (NV) memory, such as NAND flash memory, called the Non-Volatile DIMM, or NVDIMMs.

Ranging from 2400 to 3300MHz

Apacer, a well known memory manufacturer, has announced its newest DDR4 flagship memory series, the Blade DDR4 overclocking memory that will be compatible with Intel's Haswell-E CPUs and X99 Express chipset and be available with frequency ranging from 2400MHz up to 3300MHz.

DDR4 coming to tablets, smartphones

While there has been a lot of talk regarding DDR4 now that the Intel Haswell-E HEDT platform is about to official launch, the DDR4 mobile market will not be coming that soon. Today, JEDEC has announced the new JESD209-4 LPDDR4 standard which is aimed at low power devices like smartphones, tablets, notebooks and any other form of mobile device.

1866 MHz and 2133 MHz

Kingmax, a former leader on the memory market, got back in the competion in 2012 with the Nano Gaming TinyBGA. Two years later, they are showing new reference modules, making a lot of clockers and enthusiast really happy.

With 20nm TSV technology

SK Hynix has announced that it has developed the world's first highest density 128GB module based on 8Gb DDR4 using 20nm manufacturing process.

From 1600MHz to 3200MHz

Avexir has announced that its latest and cool looking Avexir Blitz Red Dragon 1.1 memory series is now available. Ranging from 1600MHz to 3200MHz and designed to fit perfectly with MSI's Z87 Gaming motherboard series, the new Avexir Blitz Red Dragon 1.1 memory series is aimed at those who want maximum performance from its memory kit as well as the cool looks to match their setup.

Five new Blitz 1.1 series models

Avexir has unveiled the new Blitz 1.1 series memory for European market that will range from 1600MHz to 3200MHz and be available as 8GB modules.

16nm 64Gb MLC NAND flash chips

SK Hynix has announced that it has started the full-scale mass production of 16nm 64Gb MLC (Multi-Level Cell) NAND flash chips. This is actually Hynix SK's second version that is more cost competitive due to its smaller chip size.

Will be back to full operation in short time

According to a report from Bloomberg, SK Hynix accident involving large fire that hit its production facility in Wuxi, China is not as bad as local media were reporting and that Hynix expects to be back to full operation in short time.

To affect NAND flash prices

A massive fire broke out at SK Hynix production facility in Wuxi, China and although there is no precise info, the accident will definitely have an impact on NAND flash prices.
