Conclusion

Update
Regarding the fact, that our sample was surprisingly noisy, ASUS sent us a new BIOS revision, which is taking care of this issue. As a result the noise level went down by a big margin, eliminating the very only issue this card had. Now the card is subjectively speaking silent, even under load. Because of this reason we changed the award after publishing this review. Furthermore ASUS will ship all the cards that make it to the retail channel with the updated BIOS, which means that no customer will get a noisy card.
The problem itself was caused by NVIDIA's Boost 2.0, since it automatically changes rotation speeds to prevent quick temperature increases. At first ASUS didn't take care of this issue but now they've released this fix.

General + -
ASUS’ brand new GeForce GTX 780 DirectCU II OC is a really nice piece of hardware. This custom card is not only quicker than a reference GTX 780 it also features ASUS latest version of the DirectCU II cooler, which makes it silent. It's just a pity that there are no games in the bundle when you buy an ASUS OC card these days. Apart from that this thing is excellent.   - Performance

Cooling / Noise Level   + -
GPU Temperatures were good at maximum of 80°C under heavy FurMark load with the fans locked at 30 % fan speed. This latest version of the DirectCU II is also very decent from a noise level perspective. Subjectively speaking this cooler can be categorized as silent while gaming and under idle conditions the new DirectCU II cooler is subjectively very silent. Furthermore the cooler is really powerful and it keeps the card at temperatures, which are way lower than what you get with the NVIDIA's reference cooler.   - Noise level in both idle and load

Performance   + -
A closer look at overall performance shows that the GTX 780 DirectCU II OC is 4.6 % faster on average in games than a reference GTX 780.
Taking a look at the clock speed shows that this card clocks at 1'045 MHz on average, when applying heavy 3D loads. At this point one can really see GPU Boost 2.0 doing it's job, since it always tries to get the maximum clock speeds out of the card, without overstepping the 80°C temperature target.
A closer look at power consumption shows, that our test system, equipped with the GTX 780 DirectCU II OC, burns 61 Watts under idle conditions and 297 Watts under load. Compared to the reference GTX 780 the heavily modified GTX 780 from ASUS consumes nine watts more in idle and five watts more unter load. Especially concerning the full load power consumption you should be aware, that the DirectCU II version clock a lot higher than the reference card.

Recommendation / Price   + -
Should you be looking for a really fast graphics card with an excellent cooler, then the GTX 780 DirectCU II OC from ASUS is a great choice. Sure, there is there are faster cards out there but it's only three percent of the much more expensive GeForce GTX Titan.   - High-End Gaming

We gave the GTX 780 DirectCU II OC from ASUS the very good 4.5 out of 5 stars.
