Conclusion

Announcement: Despite the circumstance that the rating of a product is based on as many objective facts as possible there are factors which can have an influence on a rating after publication. Every autor may perceive data differently over time whereas one possible reason for example is a deeper background knowledge or understanding of certain processes. Certain unforseen market conditions as well as changes have the potential to render a descision made at a certain point in time obsolete.

When comparing the new Vertex 460 with the initial Vertex 4, one can see whether OCZs implementation of 20 nanometer NAND has been successfull or not. Overall we have to say, that we're quite surprised, how well a job the engineers at OCZ did. Comparing the Vertex 460 to the Vertex 4 shows that the new drive is a little slower than the predecessor, concerning random throughput but on the other hand, when it comes to sequential throughput, the Vertex 460 is quite a bit faster than the Vertex 4. 

Checking the the performance numbers we measured up to 543 Megabyte per second for sequential reads and 543 Megabyte per second for sequential writes. Regarding random throughput the Vertex 460 has been able to provide 75'000 IOPS while performing random write operations and 84'500 IOPS performing random reads. Since the Vertex 460 is based on a OCZ's own Barefoot 3 M10 controller there will be no performance drops when transferring compressed data.

Taking a closer look at the price of this drive shows, that OCZ put the MSRP to 234.99 US-Dollar. Compared to the competition this isn't cheap but it's quite an attractive price point.

Recommendation

The Vertex 460 with 256 Gigabyte offers really good at a decent price point. Should you be looking for a quick drive for a fair price, then the Vertex 460 256 Gigabyte is certainly a good choice.
