Closer Look

As soon as you lift the BlackWidow Chroma, you realize how sturdy and solid it is, something we certainly expected from a gaming keyboard coming from a well known manufacturer. Razer created a keyboard that should give a sense of maximum quality to the user at any time, and it did a pretty good job as far as we are concerned. The whole keyboard has a soft touch finish which is very elegant and also well made. The BlackWidow Chroma is a full size keyboard with additional macro keys, but it still doesn't take too much space on your desktop. Since thre isn't a big wrist rest, the keyboard might feel a little bit higher, since there is nothing to elevate the position of your wrists. Looking around the BlackWidow Chroma and quickly checking for features, we find a USB 2.0 port as well as two standard 3.5mm audio jacks.

On the left side of the keyboard you can find five programmable keys, which can be set up using Razers Synapse software. A closer look at the F-keys reveals that F1 to F7 can be used to trigger additional multimedia functions in combination with the FN key, which you can find next to the space key on the right. Apart from that there are also additional functions on the keys F9 to F12, which allow you to change various settings related to the keyboard. The BlackWidow Chroma uses mechanical switches from Kalih have been customized for Razer and therefore received a Razer branding. There are actually two different types available, which are the orange and green the green ones. Our sample features the green switches and in our opinion these are very similar to the CherryMX Blue switches. Typing is smooth and the key travel is precise, however the noise they produce is rather high and it won't be everybody's darling, since there is a well audible "click" noise. In combination with the fact, that mechanical keyboards aren't silent when typing, this makes for a rather noisy combo. However, mechanical keyboard lovers sometimes appreciate that there are products which produce a rather well audible noise. Having a closer look at the RGB backlight reveals that the intensity is good and via the software it's possible to assign different colors to ever single key. By default, there are about 30 standard colors, but since this is a an RGB model you can pretty much set up any color you want. The backlight is clear as well as precise, and we have not found any darker spots.

On the back of the keyboard you can find thge usual product label as well as four rubber pads, one placed in each corner. Obviously there are two little feet, with rubber finish, which can be used to adjust the tilt of the keyboard.
