MSI is pushing hard with their Gaming Series graphics cards these days and meanwhile they've even released their mini graphics cards, with extra short PCB. Apart from the complete custom design you also get a decent factory overclocking and a typical boost clock that really isn't too bad at all.
Presentation
The mini-ITX market is becoming more and more important for most
manufacturers and it does not come as a surprise that MSI wants a piece of the
cake. The MSI GTX 760 ITX is made to fit well with the MSI Z87I AC Gaming
motherboard as it takes up two slots and has a shorter PCB that will not go over
the edge of the motherboard. It features a fully custom design packs quite a
punch considering its small size.
MSI GTX 760 MINI-ITX Gaming is based on NVIDIA's Kepler GK104-225 A2 chip,
which is manufactured by TSMC using the latest 28 nanometer process technology.
With the GeForce GTX 760 you get six SMX units which results in 1'152 CUDA
cores. Following the specifications further, there are 96 TMUs, 32 ROPs, a 256
Bit wide memory interface and 2 GB of GDDR5 memory.
Frequency wise, since MSI didn't bother to overclock the memory, it stayed
clocked at reference 1'502 MHz (effective 6'008 MHz). On the GPU side you find a
little factory overclock with a base clock of 1'006 MHz and a typical boost
clock of 1'071 MHz. That is quite shy considering it is only 38 MHz over the
reference Boost clock. However, things get interesting when we look at the
actual working frequencies, as during our tests, the highest Boost clock we
measured was 1'162 MHz while the average Boost clock was also at 1'162 MHz (in
Battlefield 3).
The card also supports GPU Boost 2.0. The first version of GPU Boost stopped
overclocking the GPU when a certain power target was hit. This new second
version of GPU Boost stops overclocking the card, when a certain temperature is
being reached. This makes sense since the temperature is the bigger inhibitor
than the power target in most cases. In this case the temperature target is 80
degrees Celsius. In other words, as long as the GPU runs lower than 80°C it will
keep overclocking until the maximum frequency has been reached. This is why in
our case the average boost clock was 91 MHz higher than the typical boost clock
the manufacturer advertises.

The card
There are not much surprises here as with the GTX 760 MINI-ITX, MSI decided
to use the new mini cooler, which is almost identical to the cooler ASUS is
using on their mini GTX 760. Cooling performance of this particular model is
rather good, but can't be compared with coolers on oversized graphics cards,
like for instance the massive Twin Frozr IV Advanced. Still the results achieved
are remarkable and especially if you consider the high typical boost clock, you
realize that it definitely not a bad cooler.
The custom PCB behind the new mini cooler packs 4+1-phase design with four
phases for the GPU and SFC and single phase for for the memory, R47. It has an
analogue power design with NCP5392P voltage regulation chip for the GPU, APL1117
PLL voltage regulator chip, 25X20 memory voltage regulator chip and Power MOSFET
that are speccd for
30V and 78A.
As noted earlier, the memory chips used are made by Elpida and carry the
model number W2032BBBG-60-F. They are specified to run at 1'502 MHz (6'008 MHz
effective).

Delivery
The card ships well bolstered in a foam made mold. Bundled with the graphics
card are a user guide, a driver CD that includes the overclocking tool MSI
Afterburner, one power converter (1 x 6-pin to 8-pin), a DVI to VGA adaptor as
well as a mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort adaptor. We would have loved to find
an additional SLI bridge in the delivery and also a game would have been great. Unfortuantely, this is sort of a trademark for MSI's Gaming series, which is
focused on delivering the best possible gaming piece of hardware at lowest
possible price, so bundle was first to suffer.

Conclusion

Overall MSI did a great job with their compact GTX 760 MINI-ITX
graphics card. Since this is one of the new MSI Gaming Series products,
it features a black and red color scheme, which MSI managed to nail
perfectly.
Although small, the cooler is able to cope with the heat generated by
the GK104 GPU but unfortunately at a rather high cost, as it is a bit
noisier than what we are used to from MSI's Twin Frozr
coolers. |

The GPU temperatures were good with a maximum of 79°C under
heavy FurMark load with the fan at auto (32%). It would have been great
if the card was inaudible under these circumstances, but frankly
speaking, this is virtually impossible to achieve with such a small
cooler.
In the end, the MSI GTX 760 MINI-ITX Gaming comes with a cooler that
does a really good job for its size.

Thanks to a factory overclock and a really decent cooler design,
the MSI GTX 760 MINI-ITX is on average 5% faster than the reference card
from Nvidia in tested games. In order to achieve this results, cooler
maintains a temperature that is always below 80°C and at that
temperature, clock speeds were at 1'162 MHz.
A closer look at the power consumption reveals that better results
should have been achieved. Compared to other models we tested, the card
draws significantly more power, especially under load, which is related
to a rather high overclocking.

Overall the MSI GTX 760 MINI-ITX comes with a rather high
typical boost clock, which gives you quite some extra performance. Other
than that it also features an efficient cooler and when it comes to the
price, MSI is asking about 40 Euro more than you would have to pay for a
reference GTX 760. The 40 Euro premium is definitely not nothing, but it
is in line with offers from competitors. If you are thinking about
building a mini-ITX gaming PC and you want to go with components from
MSI, then this is definitely the graphics card you want to
buy. |
