Closer Look

The most interesting feature of the Recon is definitely its body, which made from parts with different grip as well as rough and smooth surfaces. The shape is pretty classic with average dimensions, with well-researched materials and like usual, there is a lot of attention to details. The rough and porous surfaces ensure an excellent grip, while the smooth top with its almost velvety finish makes the mouse very comfortable right from the beginning. The shape and arrangement of buttons make the mouse symmetrical and usable by both right and left-handed gamers/users. On both profiles, there are two buttons to operate with your thumb. The wheel, which is made of plastic and covered almost entirely with rubber, is big, strong and provides excellent grip as well as tactile feedback. Right behind the wheel, there are two illuminated buttons to increase/decrease the DPI. On the back of the mouse there is the CM Storm logo, which can glow in red, green or blue color while plugged into a running PC.

Back

Recon is not a laser mouse but rather sticks to an optical sensor, the Avago ADNS-3090. It features a resolution of 4000 DPI and can be adjusted in 800DPI steps. Close to the sensor, there are three large glide pads arranged in a way which ensures a low friction but good maneuverability. Despite being a gaming mouse you can't adjust the weight, however, the Recon is already well balanced and very light. The cable, which is 1.8 meters long has not been sleeved but the USB connector is gold plated.

Software

Inside the box there is no optical media and CM Storm software is only available from the official website. The software requires approximately 35 MB of free space on your hard drive and is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
The graphic interface of the software is perfectly in line with other Cooler Master products tested so far, it is practical and easy to use. With this program you can set up macros, customize profiles, buttons and the backlight. The backlight is RGB and you can use a different color for wheel, DPI switches and back logo.

Conclusion

General + -
The CM Storm Recon is a pleasant surprise. The device is comfortable and has some really interesting features, despite the fact that it does not have a high price tag. The rubber surface provides a good grip for long gaming sessions and its symmetrical shape makes it perfect for both left and right-handers. The Avago ADNS-3090 optical sensor performs well and the software is practical and easy to use.   - Weight

Performance / Ergonomics   + -
It is not the first time that we analyze the Avago ADNS-3090 sensor, which was also behind the Tesoro Gungnir and the Corsair M40. The sensor is able to achieve a resolution of 4000 DPI and during game sessions and daily usage behaves quite well. The glide pads are made from teflon, which guarantees excellent durability. Apart from that you find different surfaces used on the mouse, which provide either perfect grip or comfortable handling. Ergonomically, the Recon is very comfortable from the first contact, thanks to the soft touch cover on the top. It is also worth to mention that this model is also suitable for left-handers.   - Sensor
- Comfort

Software   + -
The software, available on the official website, it is well made and easy to use. The program is complete, intuitive and easy to use. There are even some interesting options for the backlight, like the "LED mode" which is avaible in three differents ways. We would like to see the possibility to import and export profiles from the software, which is very useful if you want to backup the settings or share them with friends.   - Easy to use - No import/export profiles

Recommendation / Price   + -
The price of the CM Storm Recon is about 45 Euros. In terms of value, it is certainly a product of excellent quality and in line with competition with features, finish and manufacturing quality.   - Price

Rating
We gave the Recon from CM Storm 4 out of 5 stars.
