EVGA X99 Classified Review
Category : X99
Published by Marc Büchel on 02.09.14
The X99 Classified is the high-end X99 motherboard from EVGA and therefore it comes with a good looking design as well as a lot of features. Apart from that the X99 is EVGA's overclocking motherboard so you can combine it with EVBot and there are quite a few other interesting options.

With the launch of X99 also EVGA is amongst the few motherboard makers, which have a complete line-up ready at launch day. Their top range model is again the Classified or to be a bit more precise the X99 Classified.

Features

Digital Power Design

Since quite some time EVGA equips its boards with digital power designs. Using EVGA's own tuning software you can for example change voltages in Windows. As you might expect it from a high-end motherboard, there are only high quality parts used for the power design.

PCI Express Switches

Using the PCI-E Disable Switches, it's possible to deactivate every single PCI Express slot individually. This useful if you have to troubleshoot your system.

E-Leet Tuning Utility

With E-Leet you get EVGA's very own tuning software, which allows you to change anything related to clock speeds from within Windows.

Triple BIOS

With the X99 Classified you get no less then three BIOS chips. Should you do overclocking or even extreme overclocking it can happen that a BIOS get corrupted. If this is going to happen, you can flash back a working version of the BIOS, which resides in one of the backup BIOS'es.

M.2 Support

The new EVGA X99 Classified motherboard features an M.2 slot. This motherboard can be equipped with an SSD in M.2 format and it is wired directly to the X99 PCH via two PCI Express lanes, therefore offering x4 bandwidth. In other words up to 10 Gbps can be pushed over the bus through this slot.

Layout

The EVGA X99 Classified comes with a non ATX form factor. The board is a bit bigger than ATX form factor or to be more precise 2.3 centimeters (about 1 inch) wider and therefore EVGA is using the E-ATX standard. The PCB as well as all expansion slots have been kept in black entirely. To give the design it's own touch there is a big EVGA logo on the PCH cooler. The layout itself has been well thought and there are plenty of features, like five PCIe 16x slots, ten SATA connectors, a Creative Core3D audio chip and more ...

EVGA equipped the X99 Classified with a 10+4 phase digital power design with an IR3563B Chip from International Rectifier taking care of the CPU VRM. Furthermore you will find 100 percent Japan made high quality capacitors so that's a pretty strong power design.
The memory gets one digital phases per channel (4 DIMMs), which are also driven by chips from International Rectifier. In this case there are IR3570B chips. This gives you 4 phases in total for the memory.

Totally you'll find eight DIMM-slots on the EVGA X99 Classified. Officially supported are memory clock speeds of up to 3000MHz and more. If all the slots are equipped with 8 Gigabyte modules, you can have a maximum of 64 Gigabyte memory on this motherboard. There is also enough space around the CPU socket, to install large CPU coolers.

Southbridge as well as current converters are being held at adequate temperatures via two passive cooling blocks. Booth blocks are rather big and they've been connected to eachother using a heatpipe. Apart from that the cooling blocks have been very well manufactured. The PCH cooler received a large EVGA logo in red, which looks rather nice and unique.

Connectors and I/O

Totally EVGA equipped the X99 Classified with ten angled SATA ports, which is enough for every gaming rig or overclocking setup. All the SATA ports support 6Gbps bandwidth and they've been natively wired to the PCH. Apart from that, in order to increase storage flexibility there are two M.2 slot.
Furthermore there are practical onboard power- and reset-buttons as well as a debug LED. If you need to reset the BIOS there are actually two BIOS reset switches. One can be found onboard and the other at the I/O Panel. It is common with multi-GPU boards these days, that there are Molex plug at the bottom of the board to provide additional power and therefore better stability for Multi-GPU-Setups. In case of this motherboard there is 6-pin connector to take care of this job. EVGA also added some OC features to their top range motherboard like the EVBot connector above the DIMM slots on the right hand side.
As for the PCIe connectors with this motherboard you get five PCIe 16x Gen 3.0 slots and one PCIe x4 slot.

Totally you'll find seven fan headers on the EVGA X99 Classified which is more than enough to provide even an overclocking rig or even a high-end gaming machine with plenty of fresh air. Unfortunately there are only the three headers at the top edge of the board, that feature four pins. The other four fan headers offer three pins and they have been angled by 90°.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel EVGA equipped the X99 Classified with four USB 3.0 ports, six USB 2.0 port and two Gigabit ethernet ports. Furthermore there is a CLR CMOS button, an analogue audio panel as well as a digital audio out.

BIOS

Overall this BIOS version from EVGA features a very well thought structure and it is easy to find the settings you'd like to manipulate. Looking at the design, we struggle to understand how EVGA can create a really good looking and clean motherboard but when it comes to the BIOS design we see a final result, that just doesn't match the rest of the product. The basic structure of this particular BIOS is just great an we're looking forward to the day when EVGA is going to pair it with simple, yet decent design.

Conclusion

Allgemein   + -
The X99 Classified is EVGAs interpretation of an Intel X99 based high end gaming and overclocking motherboard. This board scores with a very nice design, whereas the black PCB as well as the black and red heatsinks look strikingly good. Furthermore there are no less than five PCI Express x16 slots. Even the delivery is convincing, you will find everything you could possibly need to setup your new board appropriately. On another note there is a bunch of overclocking features, so even the extreme enthusiast among us will be happy.   - Design

Layout   + -
Generally the EVGA X99 Classified's layout has been very well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors. Apart from those also the ATX power connector has been angled by 90° and there are even four fan headers that received the same treatment. Once more practical are the power- and reset-buttons along with two clr_CMOS switches. Furthermore there even is a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Totally you find five PCI Express x16 slots, which have been well placed, which means it's possible to build a quad SLI setup using this motherboard. At the same area there are two M.2 slots and the fact that there are two of these slots is cool but we would have preferred one M.2 x4 over two M.2 x2. Another nice addition are the two LAN controllers on this board. If we start looking for overclocking features, we find one EVBot connector as well as an impressive power design with high quality components.   - Angled SATA connectors - 5 x Full-Size PCI Express x16
- Power/Reset-Button onboard
- Debug display
- Space around the CPU socket - 2 x M.2

Having a closer look at the average performance results we evaluated, we see the Classified score last in both our overall rankings. We're really hoping EVGA is going to invest more time into optimizing the BIOS to a point where the Classified becomes fully capable of keeping up with the competition. On another note we also had a look at power consumption and noted that this is definitely not the most energy efficient X99 board we've had for testing.     - 3DMark

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
If we look at the BIOS, which we get with the EVGA X99 Classified, we think it's a bit too fancy. It would be great if EVGA managed to deploy a BIOS design which is as clean as their physical motherboard. In combination with the very simple and easy to understand menu, this would be a great combination.   - Clear arrangement - Design

Recommendation   + -
With the X99 Classified, EVGA created a good looking board. Unfortunately this particular model is a bit slower than the competition. If we check the price of the board we find it listed over at Geizhals for 379.90 Euro and the price at Newegg.com is 414.99 US-Dollar (taxes excluded).   - Enthusiast
