Bundle

Overview

The box in which the Fractal Design Core 2500 is packed is pretty simple. It is made out of cardboard and includes a list of the most important features of the case. Inside the box, there is the case itself, protected by a plastic cover. To ensure that nothing is going to break during shipping, Fractal Design used two big pieces of plastic-sponge which is more than enough to protect the Core 2500. The bundle is simple but still complete, as you get a user manual in both German and English with colored pictures that explain how to use the Fractal Design Core 2500 features, a great number of screws, standoffs and HDD slides.

Overview

Once unboxed, you will instantly realize that the Core 2500 is a refined case, kept in pure Fractal Design's style. As far as aesthetics are concerned, it does not have any particular features and the only interesting thing is the front panel, which is made out of plastic material but looks like it is actually black brushed aluminum. The front panel features two 5.25” openings, and it is refined by a narrow vertical mesh on both sides which should supply enough fresh air to the front fans. At the top, you can find the I/O panel, which features two USB 3.0 ports, audio jacks, an HDD LED, as well as Power and Reset buttons. The top panel also has room for two 140mm fans, which are optional. Both side panels are secured with thumb-screws for fast removal, and they are both plain black. The right panel does not have any kind of openings, while the left one features a 140mm opening for an optional fan that would supply fresh air directly to the graphics card. The back panel features a big mesh too, and a 140mm pre-installed Silent Series R2 fan. Besides that, there is an opening for the motherboard I/O panel, and right below, there are seven PCI expansion slots covered by white brackets, which are also secured with thumb-screws. The back panel also features a little switch with three different levels, that can be used to regulate the speed of up to three fans. Last but not the least, is the standard ATX PSU opening.

Installation

Overview

Building a system inside the Fractal Core 2500 is very simple and easy. The internal space is well designed and the case features a few technical solutions that will make your life easier, even if you are not a skilled system builder. The motherboard tray, thanks to the brass standoffs is compatible with ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ITX form factor motherboards. Behind the CPU socket, Fractal Design included a big opening which allows you to install aftermarket coolers, that need a backplate, without taking out the motherboard. As far as the storage is concerned, the Core 2500 features four 2.5”/3.5” slots, all with rubber groomets to ensure that there is no transfer of HDD vibration to the case. The slides are arranged in order to leave a good margin for the cooling of the graphics card. In other words, two slides are placed close to the 5.25" slots and the other two in the lower part of the case. Behind the motherboard tray, you can install one more 2.5” drive. The PSU area features four rubber feet, so vibrations will not be a problem here either. If you want to build a tidy system, the Core 2500 is a great choice as it features 15mm of space between the motherboard tray and the right panel. The overall quality is good especially because we are talking about a 50€-range PC case but the side panels, the motherboard tray and the HDD slides are made out of some kind of metal that feels a bit cheap and is easily bendable. We would rather see that Fractal Design saved money somewhere else and use stiffer materials.

Ventilation options

Overview

When it comes to cooling, Fractal Design does not joke around as the Core 2500 features two included 140mm Silent Series R2 fans, but it can fit up to seven in total. You get a pre-installed 140mm fan in the front, and one in the back. In case this is not enough, you can fit two more at the top, one more in the front, one in the bottom and one on the left side panel. Below the PSU and behind the front panel, there are useful removable dust filters, that should keep you system nice and clean. As far as CPU cooler is concerned, it can be as high as 162mm.

Air cooling is not the only field where the Core 2500 can be good as it has enough room to easily fit a liquid sistem, with a 240/280mm radiator at the front panel, and a 240mm radiator below the top panel. On the back panel you can also add another 120/140mm radiator, which is good for those who are planning to use an All-in-One CPU cooler.

Conclusion

General   + -
The Fractal Design Core 2500 is a simple and well designed case that is quite good but has a flaws as well. Thanks to its elegant look, it can easily fit in any kind setting without raising any eyebrows but than again it is not aimed for high-end systems. Both the power supply and hard drives feature rubber grommets which should reduce the vibration noise and the interior concept offers lots of options. We would really love to see thicker side panels, which would increase the overall quality of this case. The way the case is at the moment makes it quite clear that Fractal Design is trying to keep the price low, infact the Core 2500 costs around 50 Euro.

Manufacturing quality / Ergonomics   + -
As we already mentioned, the build quality could be better where the use of thicker side panels would have helped a lot. The interior space come with quite a few decent features, like for instance, the switch to regulate the fan speeds. Furthermore there are plenty of option regarding ventilation and cooling in general. You can for example install radiators with different sizes.

- Materials not perfect

Design   + -
The design of the Fractal Design Core 2500 is simple and clean, since almost the entire case has been painted black, except for a few white detailes like fans, HDD carriages and slot bezels. It also features a front panel plate that has been made from plastic but looks surprisingly similar to brushed aluminium. Unfortunately, one can see at a first glance, that this case has been optimized towards a low price.

Recommendation   + -
The Fractal Design Core 2500 is a rather versatile case, which can be equipped with a vast variety of products. Therefore you can easily build a gaming system or even an office PC with this enclosure. As we already mentioned this case is listed on Geizhals at 50 Euro excluding shipping costs.
