With the new GeForce GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum, ASUS introduced a very interesting and unique product into market. A graphics card that can be chilled with air, water or both at the same time thanks to ASUS' hybrid DirectCU H2O cooler. The GTX 980 Poseidon is actually the second iteration of this card and as usual, we're curious to find out what this thing can do.

The GeForce GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum is ASUS's second card, that ships with a waterblock from the factory. In fact, the manufacturer is using a hybrid solution, which means this card can be used water or aircooled. In this review we're going to have a look at the performance of this beast under watercooled conditions. Apart from a highly custom cooler you get a custom PCB with beefed-up power design as well as a rather substantial factory overclock.



ASUS provided the GeForce GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum with a rather steep factory overclock. The GPU on this particular card is set to run a 1178 MHz base clock and a 1279 MHz boost clock. In the case of the maximum boost clock, which is actually achieved while gaming we see our sample running at 1305 MHz. The clock speeds we're only lower when we were running Furmark and it this case the card was still capable of pushing out 1305 MHz. If you keep in mind, that NVIDIA's reference card runs 1126 MHz base clock and 1216 MHz boost clock you see that ASUS's maximum boost clock is more than 5.18 percent higher and this is going to make for a measurable difference. 

Unfortunately ASUS did not overclock the 4GB of GDDR5 memory although there is quite some potential slumbering in the chips the maker is using they're set to run at 1'753 MHz (7'012 MHz effective).

The card

 


The DirectCU H2O cooler that comes with the Poseidon Platinum is an entirely new designed hybrid cooler, the first of its kind. The DirectCU H2O allows users to choose whether they want to chill their graphics card using air, water or even both at the same time. The cooler is made of three different parts, there is a vapor chamber, the fin stack and the face-plate with two fans. The vapor chamber is milled from copper and it's surrounded by an aluminium part that chills all the memory chips, the MOSFETs from the main power design and the core and memory voltage regulation chips via thermal pads. On top of that there are three nickel plated copper heatpipes - two with 6mm and one with 8mm diameter - that are connected to the vapor chamber and the aluminium fin stack. The fin stack which is being provided with fresh air via two 90mm fans. The fans carry the model number FDC10H12S9-C. The water channel that features standard G1/4" threaded fittings goes through the vapor chamber forming a U.
Overall the cooler is very well made. With the face-plate, it would have been a good idea if ASUS had put another screw roughly where the PCI-Express power plugs go because on our sample the face-plate was a bit loose (can be moved up and down).

 
The GeForce GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum graphics card, or to be precise our sample of it, allowed a maximum stable overclock of 1'480 MHz for the GPU and 2'150 MHz on the memory side. To determine stability we used 3DMark. With these clocks we had to feed the GPU with 1.21 Volts and the memory ran at stock voltages.

 



Like most of ASUS' recent high-end cards the PCB has been completely reworked and the power design beefed-up. A closer look at it shows a 10 phase power implementation for the main power design where the GPU gets eight (there are five on the reference card) and the memory two phases. The card also features a full backplate to prevent bending and protect the card at the same time.
Component wise ASUS makes use of high quality, so called Super Alloy Power, parts. Last but not least, located at the rear of the PCB there are several voltage reading and modification points but unfortunately they are not labelled.
Checking the voltage regulation chip we find a digital multi-phase controller labelled Digi+ ASP1212 for the GPU, and one unidentified Richtek 2-phase controller labelled 02=FE A1B for the memory.

 


The memory chips used are made by Samsung and carry the model number K4G41325FC-HC28. They are specified to run at 1'750 MHz (7'000 MHz effective).

Delivery

 


The card ships well bolstered in a foam made mold. Bundled with the graphics card you find user guide, driver CD, DVI to VGA adapter and one power converter (2x6-Pin-PCIe to 1x8-Pin-PCIe) as well as an ASUS ROG sticker. The bundle is actually ok, but we would have loved to find some addtional goodies. The door hanger, which can be found with ROG motherboards would be nice for instance or maybe even marchandising stuff like a keychain.

With the GeForce GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum, ASUS has a highly attractive and unique product in its portfolio. We like and appreciate the idea of a hybrid cooling solution, that allows users to choose how they want to chill their card. It also allows for watercooling out of the box without voiding the warranty. 3D performance as well as cooling performance are good and we also like the fact that the card is equiped with a backplate.
As always we would have liked to see the memory factory overclocked and the overclocking on the core pushed further.
Overall also the delivery is something that is on a good level with this card. Next to the usual accessories like for instance the driver disk as well as a little manual you can stop by at NVIDIA and even get a game.

In terms of raw cooling performance, the DirectCU H2O offers good air cooling performance. Especially when you consider the design of this cooler compared to a DirectCU II for example, then the air cooling performance is very good. Apparently the card runs at even lower temperatures when the watercooler is being used.
If we use the card aircooled, noise levels are very reasonable. In idle the card can be described as very silent and under full load the cooler is silent.

Overall, the 3D performance is good but as said previously, performance could have easily been improved by additionally overclocking the memory. Nevertheless this is complaining on a very high level, since this is a factory overclocked GTX 980 graphics cards.
A closer look at power consumption reveals that this GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum astonishingly little power and therefore the efficiency of this card is very good.

With the GeForce GTX 980 Poseidon Platinum, ASUS has a custom GTX 980 with hybrid watercooler in its portfolio, which is a really interesting piece of hardware. Should you be looking for a GTX 980 which is very easy to using in a custom watercooling loop, features a factory overclocking and good design, then this card should definitely be check out. Checking prices we find that this card retails at 584 Euro. Since this is a custom card with integrated watercooler the price is adequately chosen.   - Enthusiast
