Features

Digi+

Since quite some time ASUS has been equipping its boards with digital power designs. Using the right software it is not only possible to adjust voltages while being in Windows on can now also control impedances. Furthermore this board features high quality 10K black metallic capacitor which guarantee a long lifespan.

ASUS Fan Xpert 3

ASUS Fan Xpert 3 provides customizable settings for fans that have been attached directly to the onboard fan headers. With the Fan Auto Tuning feature, ASUS Fan Xpert 3 automatically detects and tweaks all fan speeds and in the end reduces unwanted noise.

SATA Express

SATA Express is a new port for storage devices that basically combines two SATA connectors and bundles them. Each SATA Express port has been wired using two PCI Express Gen2 lanes offering a total of 10 Gbps bandwidth. Compared to SATA-III with 6 Gbps bandwidth this is quite an improvement.

M.2 Support

The new ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) motherboard from ASUS features an M.2 slot. This motherboard can be equipped with an SSD in M.2 format and it is wired directly to the X99 PCH via two PCI Express lanes, therefore offering x2 bandwidth. In other words up to 10 Gbps can be pushed over the bus through this slot.

USB 3.1

The new X99-A USB 3.1 has the same layout of the X99-A but in this version its shipped with two ultra-fast USB 3.1 with transfer rates of 10Gb/s placed at back I/O panel. In order to visually show which ones are the USB 3.1 ports, the color has been changed to light blue. When we released this article no devices with USB 3.1 interface have been available. It is to be expected that the first devices will hit the market during the second half of 2015.

Crystal Sound 2

With Crystal Sound 2 you get ASUS' interpretation of high quality onboard audio. Supporting up to eight channels, the Crystal Sound 2 solution received shielding from other onboard components. Apart from that there are high quality ELNA capacitors offering as clear as possible audio.

Layout

With X99 ASUS decided to change the color scheme of their Classic series motherboards. They've moved away from black and gold to black and white. You find a black PCB as well as coolers with white elements. As you might have expected, the layout has been well thought and there is for example enough clearance around the CPU socket to install even todays largest CPU coolers. If you want to install extra long graphics cards, there will be no issues, thanks to the angled SATA ports.

The ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) comes with a digital 8+4 phase power design. The CPU gets eight phases and the memory gets a stable current supply from four individual phases. Furthermore ASUS equips this board with their so called "BlackWing Chokes". Apart from that these chokes can cope with up to 60A per phase. A closer look at the capacitors reveals there are 10K Black Metallic Caps, which have an average life span of 10'000 hours.

Totally you'll find eight DIMM-slots on the X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express). Officially supported are DDR4 3200 (O.C.) / 2800 (O.C.) / 2666 (O.C.) / 2400 (O.C.) / 2133 (O.C.). There is engough space between the DIMM-slots and the CPU socket which means that you wont encounter compatibility problems with big coolers even when you choose to install RAM with big heatspreaders. Also supported are Xtreme Memory Profiles (XMP) in version 2.0.

On the X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) the southbridge is being cooled by a passiv cooling block. A closer look at the VRM area shows that there are two more heatsinks taking care of adequate cooling. Thanks to the fact, that the new Core i7-5960X as well as Core i7-5930K support a total of 40 PCI Express 3.0 lanes, there is no need for an additional PLX chip. 40 lanes are sufficient for 4-way setups and there are even 8 lanes left to install for example a powerful PCIe SSD (should there still be space on the board). When it comes to this particular board and multi GPU setups we have to mention, that since the second and the third PCIe slot are right next to one another you can install a maximum of three VGAs.

Connectors and I/O

In total ASUS equipped the X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) with eight angled SATA ports. All ports offer 6Gbps bandwidth and they have been natively wired to the X99 PCH. Other than that there is one SATA Express port, natively wired to the PCH as well as an M.2 x2 slot, which has been located right below the PCH cooler. Although this is not a high-end X99 motherboard you find practical onboard power- and reset-buttons as well as a debug LED on this board. What's standard with ASUS motherboards since quite a few generations is the MemOK button which has proven useful quite a few times.

There are six fan headers on the X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) which is more than enough, to provide a well equipped high-end system or workstation with fresh air. The fan headers are located close to the CPU as well as spread over the board. Other than that it's a good thing that all of them feature four pins, which allows for rpm regulation in BIOS as well as under Windows.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel ASUS equipped the X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) USB 3.1 with a BIOS flash back button, one PS/2 mouse/keyboard connector, two USB 3.1, four USB 3.0/2.0 ports, four USB 2.0/1.1 ports, one gigabit ethernet port, as well as an optical out and an analogue audio panel.

BIOS

ASUS was the first motherboard manufacturer that introduced graphical UEFI BIOS back in the days and since that day not much has changed. There have been some minor changes here and there but ASUS didn't touch the basic layout or Design. Since it's great anyway since day one, why should they. The interface is easy to understand and also childrens play to use. There are also quite a few additional settings to squeeze the last bit of performance out of the board.

Conclusion

Allgemein   + -

The X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) from ASUS is an overall really good board, that comes with a rather affordable price tag, additional to the X99-A ASUS has equippid this board with two USB 3.1 ports and a small hub with two extra USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 connector. Compared to the predecessor the motherboard maker changed the color scheme from black/gold to black/white, which in our opinion is quite a bit better looking. Despite the attractive price there are also features such as beefed up audio. What actually helps ASUS save a few bucks with this board is the fact that there are no heatpipes connecting the different cooling blocks.

- USB 3.1
- Transfer Express Hub
- Layout

Layout   + -
The ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) layout has been well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. A closer look at the full-size PCIe x16 slots reveals that slot number two and three are right next to one another. This means that you can install up to three dual-slot graphics cards. We like the fact, that there is a SATA Express port as well as an additional M.2 x2 slot. These additional ports greatly add to the flexibility of this board.   - Angled SATA connectors - 4 x Full-Size PCI Express slots
- Space around the CPU socket - M.2
- SATA Express
- PCIe x16 no. 2 and 3 right next to eachother

Performance   + -
Let's have closer look at overall 3D performance. Calculating the average of all 3D benchmarks we ran, we see that this board comes in sixth overall. Concerning the average of all 2D benchmarks we ran, this board again scores a sixth place out of ten models tested. On another note we had a look at power consumption and in this case we clearly see that we have a board here that has been equipped with quite a few additional chips. But nevertheless in case of load power consumption the result is very good specially in load stays jusft after X99-A in second place.   - Power consumption load - 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme
- SiSoft Sandra 1

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
As you might have expected from ASUS you get an excellent BIOS which offers not only a boatload of tuning and tweaking options but is also very easy to use. Finding the right menus in a recent ASUS BIOS is not difficult at all, which is not only thanks to the graphical user interface but also comes from the well-thought structure.   - Clear arrangement

Recommendation   + -
Should you be looking for a reasonably priced X99 motherboard with the latewst USB 3.1 technology as well as plenty of other features, then you should have a look at this particular model. Chekcing prices we find this model listed for 253 Euro over at Geizhals.   - Enthusiast
- Workstation

Rating
We give the ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 (Transfer Express) very good 4.5 out of 5 stars.
