ASRock X99E-ITX/ac Review
Category : X99
Published by Marc Büchel on 09.06.15
For now ASRock is the only motherboard manufacturer that has a mini ITX X99 motherboard in its portfolio. This allows for some rather interesting builds but nevertheless you should be a aware that you'll have to make some compromises with this little beast.

Until today, ASRock is the first motherboard vendor that has an ITX X99 motherboard in its portfolio. Since with this form factor space is very limited, ASRock tossed two memory slots, meaning that only dual channel memory is supported instead of quad channel. Apart from that we're really curious to find out what features equipped this board with. On another note, this particular board allow for a comparison of the effects of dual channel to quad channel in combination with the X99 chipset.

Features

6 Phase Power Design

Since there is almost no space at all for an X99 chipset based motherboard, the power design is pretty compact, but that doesn't mean it doesn't pack some serious punch. Due to the fact, that there is an "OC Socket" on this board, this is necessary as well. One single phase with DrMOS caps is capable of covering 60A, which makes each phase quite strong.

Nichicon Gold Caps

A closer look at the audio implementation of this board shows again, that ASRock had to the with the very limited space. Nevertheless the manufacturer is using Gold Caps from Nichicon to improve signal quality in combination with an ALC 1150 chip from Realtek.

M.2 Support

The X99E-ITX/AC motherboard from ASRock features an M.2 slot which is placed between two PCIe slots. This motherboard can be equipped with SSDs in M.2 format and it is wired directly to the X99 PCH via four PCI Express lanes, therefore offering up to 20 Gbps can be pushed over the bus through this slot.

Cooler

Surprisingly ASRock ships this board with a cooler in the delivery. A closer look at the socket shows that the mounting holes had to placed differently in order to free some more space, in order to squeeze the an entire X99 chipset into this very tight form factor. If you're wondering about the socket name, it's a so called Narrow-ILM-type Socket LGA2011-3. Quickly testing the cooler at 23°C ambient temperature with prime95 revealed the following test results:
- 29°C idle temp @ 49.7 dBA (very noisy)
- 68°C load temp @ 51dBA (very noisy)

Layout

At a first glance the ASRock X99E-ITX/AC leaves a very good impression with its good looking design. The manufacturer decided to go for a combination of black and blue, which suites nicely and in the end you get an aesthetic looking product. The layout had to be carefully planned even into the last tiny little details. Since the ITX formfactor really doesn't leave a lot of space, this was actually a necessity. Apart from that ASRock had to do compromises on the features side. For instance there are only two DIMM slots and there is a ILM-type socket. ASRock simply had persue new paths since otherwise it would have been impossible to squeeze an X99 chipset into an ITX formfactor. A quick look at the heatspreaders shows, that they're of high quality and the do add some weight to the board, which always leaves a good impression.

ASRock equipped the X99E-ITX/AC with a digital six phase power design. In this case the manufacturer is using DrMOS chokes, which are capable of dealing with up to 60A current. The fact that every single phase supports 60A is a reasonable choice, especially considering that there is an "OC Socket" on this motherboard. Looking for the controller chip, which is taking care of the entire VRM stage of this little board we find a six-phase controller chip. In order to better use the limited space, some of the VRM component have been moved to the backside of the motherbaord.

Due to limited space, this board only features two DIMM-slots. Officially supported is DDR4 with up to 3200+ MHz. Also supported are Xtreme Memory Profiles (XMP) in version 2.0. If you equip both slots with 8 GB modules, rig with up to 16 GB memory can be assembled.

On the X99E-ITX/AC PCH as well as current converters receive separate cooling. Checking on the two VRM coolers we see there is no heatpipe connecting. Other than that the weight of this board is quite high, which is also partially due to cooling blocks. Subjectively speaking a high weight is a first indicator for a quality motherboard.

Connectors and I/O

ASRock equipped the X99E-ITX/AC with six SATA ports. Four of which have been angled by 90 degrees and the two straight ones, directly above the PCI Express x16 connector can be combined to form a SATA-Express header. There is also an Ultra-M.2 x4 expansion slot, which has been connected through four PCI Express lanes. Overall there is good storage flexibility with this motherboard, although it's within the boundries set by the small form factor in combination with the huge X99 chipset. Looking for practical onboard power- and reset-buttons as well as a debug LEDs we can't find any. The reason for this is simple again: there is not enough space.

In total there are three fan headers on the ASRock X99E-ITX/AC which is enough, to provide a well equipped high-end system or also a workstation with fresh air. The fan headers are located around the CPU socket as well as spread over the motherboard. All headers offer 4 pins, which means that you can control fan speeds from within BIOS or Windows.

Looking at the external connectors directly at the back-panel ASRock equipped the X99E-ITX/AC with one PS2 mouse/keyboard connector, two USB 3.1 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, two gigabit ethernet ports, an eSATA connector as well as an optical out and an analogue audio panel. Furtheremore you'll also find a clear CMOS-reset button.

BIOS

With the most recent version of ASRock's UEFI BIOS, we find a visually more attractive than what you got with the predecessor, but still we would like it to be less flashy. In terms of functionality you can not only monitor system information, CPU and motherboard temperature, CPU voltage and DRAM status but you can also create your own fan profiles for the different PWM headers.

Conclusion

Allgemein   + -
The the X99E-ITX/AC ASRock is conquering new land. No other motherboard vendor has an X99 based miniITX model in its portfolio. Overall ASRock did a good job, although there is simply not enough space to implement all features the massive X99 chipset offers. Therefore ASRock had to toss two DIMM slots and apart from that they're using an Narrow-ILM-type socket, which make the board only compatible to very few coolers. Nevertheless this little board leave an overall good impression. When it comes to performance you real world applications are not taking a significant hit from the smaller memory interface. Apparently it's only the theoretical memory bandwidth benchmarks, which show 50% lower performance. This in the end has quite an impact on our overall rating (average of all results), but as we mentioned, there is no noticable difference in realworld applications, since the memory interface acts as a bottleneck, which in this case is not at its limit.
The storage flexibility you get with this tiny X99 motherboard is really good. This means there are enough SATA ports, there is a SATA Express header and there is also an Ultra-M.2 Slot.
Also the I/O panel has been equipped with good mix of connectors. We like the fact, that there are eight USB connectors, including two USB3.1 headers.
  - Design
- Layout

- Narrow-ILM-Type Socket
- Dual Channel DDR4

Layout   + -

The ASRock X99E-ITX/AC's layout has been very well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors, but unfortunately there are no power- and reset-buttons. There is also no debug display which would have been very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Apart from that we like the fact, that there is an M.2 x4 slot, which allows for the installation of high-performance M.2 SSDs.

  - Angled SATA connectors - CLR CMOS Button (I/O panel)
- M.2 x4
- Space around the CPU socket - No debug LED, no power/reset button

Performance   + -
Having a closer look at overall 2D as well as 3D performance shows that this board ranks last in both cases. The reason for that can be found in the memory bandwidth benchmarks, which are really pulling the average rating down, although not having a very small impact on real world performance. On another note we had a look at power consumption and it turns out that this board is quite a bit more power efficient than other models.   - Power consumption - 3DMark Ice Storrm

Overclocking / BIOS   + -
The BIOS of the X99E-ITX/AC is identical from what you get with other recent ASRock motherboards these days the only difference is the backgound color. This means the basic structure and also the design has not been changed. Overall the structure is easy to understand and even if you're not a very experienced user you will find the things you'd like to change. On another note ASRock is dedicated and pushing hard did a pretty good job with this on but still, every here and there the performance could be improved.   - Clear arrangement - Sheer amount of options

Recommendation   + -
The ASRock X99E-ITX/AC is listed at geizhals for a price of 308 Euro. This makes it rather expensive if you consider that there are apparently not too many features. The price certainly reflects research and development costs, since it takes quite an effort to build such a compact high-end boar. If you want to build an X99 based ITX system then there is no way around this board, since (until today) there is no other miniITX X99 motherboard available.   - High-Performance-MiniITX
