Test conditions

Regarding our headset microphone tests we subjectively describe acoustics, microphone quality as well as ergonomics. The endresult therefore relies on the tester himself. We are doing our best to ensure comparable results if different reviewers are testing different products. We think that these review can be seen as a help if you like to buy a specific product and can therefore be seen as subjective consumer advice.

Wearing confort / ergonomics / features

With their created a comfortable gaming headset. Thanks to a reasonable weight, good balance and soft ear cushions this headset is comfortable to wear. Actually, the padding is made from memory foam, which has been covered using microfiber fabrics and therefore the VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming should fit virtually any head shape. Apart from that the microfiber cloth should last a small eternity. If you’re concerned about the durability of this headset, then we can tell you that its construction is very solid. Corsair is using a combination of high-quality plastic, aluminum as and steel to create a product which can cope with quite some punishment. A quick look at the cable shows it measures approximately 1.8 meters, which is long enough

If you want to control the volume you’ll find a slider on the left ear cup. By moving it up and down you either increase or decrease the volume. The left ear cup also features an intuitive to find mute button for the microphone, allowing you to mute the microphone without having to take it off.

Acoustics

Headphone

In order to really convince a headset doesn’t just have to be comfortable, what’s most important is how it sounds. To test the VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming we’ve been listening to music, playing games and watching movies. Since Corsair equipped this headset with big, enclosing and cloth padded ear cups there is some passive noise cancelling but you can still hear ambient noise or other people talking next to you pretty well. If you’re looking for a headset with more effective passive noise cancelling, we’d recommend ones, which ship with leatherette ear pads.

If you take the Corsair VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming headset out of the box and connect it to your PC without optimizing the sound at all then the soundscape is surprisingly flat. Neither the heights, the mids nor the depths show a convincing presence which is rather disillusioning. Since Corsair is using 50mm drivers on this headset we’re assuming that a software equalizer should greatly help improving sound characteristics. In order to really help this headset perform better we’ve used a software equalizer called “Hear”. This equalizer allows very fine adjustments and allows to drastically improve sound quality. We were quite surprised to see that we had to boost the frequency range from 8KHz upwards by no less than 8dB in order to realize heights which sound clear and almost crisp. In order to realize decent bass, that packs a little punch we had to boost the frequencies between 20Hz and 200Hz between +1 and +6dB. But even after all these optimizations the sound stage wasn’t as colorful as we expected it to be.

Microphone

The microphone on this headset is average and the design is good. As you can see from the pictures there is a small button on the left ear cup, which is easily accessible and allows you to mute the microphone. The VOID is capable of making your voice sound clear and well understandable talking over TeamSpeak or Skype. We also like the fact that the microphone arm is bendable.

Conclusion

The Corsair VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming headset is an average product. The build quality as well as the materials used are impeccable and excatly on the level we expected from Corsair. The comfort is very important with gaming headsets and this one is able to excel in that matter. The soft, memory foam cushions fit perfectly and you will never experience pressure points. When it comes to sound quality we would like Corsair to improve the drivers, since we would expect a sound stage that is way more colorful at the given price point. Thanks to the fact that the factory preset is linear - but unfortunately very flat - you can tune the sound quite a bit using an equalizer.

The price of the VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming is in line with other similar products. The starting price at Geizhals, excluding shipping costs, is set at 89.90 Euro. Since the sound could really be improved the Corsair VOID Surround Hybrid Stereo Gaming earns 4 out of 5 stars.
