Toshiba OCZ TR 200 960 Gigabyte Review

With their OCZ TR 200 series, Toshiba has a line of SSDs in their portfolio that comes with BiCS3 memory, which is based on 3D-NAND with 64 layers. This allows the vendors to crate high capacity drives at aggressive price points. Looking for the controller we find the proven TC58 from Toshiba and we're rather curious to find out how this drive does in our review.

With the TR200 Toshiba shows their first SSD that is based on 64 layer BiCS3 memory. The predecessor, the Trion 150, was using 15 nanometer TLC NAND flash memory, wheras the new TR200 is now based on 3D NAND. Switching to 3D NAND allows a vendor to lower its pricing even further and at the same time realize drives with higher capacity.

As with the predecessor also the TR200 is using a Toshiba Alishan controller, which goes by the name TC58, or to be even more precise: TC58NC1010GSB-00. Apart from that it has been combined with TH58TF0T23TA2H 3D-NAND flash memory, which, as we already mentioned, features 64 layers. A closer look at the line-up reveals there are three different models, which differ in capacity: 240GB, 480GB and 960GB SKUs are available.

A closer look at the TR200's bundle shows clearly that these entry level drives are targeting the entry level segment. Nevertheless Toshiba offers a 3-year pick-up and return warranty plan.

Conclusion


Announcement: Despite the circumstance that the rating of a product is based on as many objective facts as possible there are factors which can have an influence on a rating after publication. Every autor may perceive data differently over time whereas one possible reason for example is a deeper background knowledge or understanding of certain processes. Certain unforseen market conditions as well as changes have the potential to render a descision made at a certain point in time obsolete.

With the Toshiba TR200, Toshiba launched the sucessor of the Trion 150, which again features aggressive pricing. On the other hand the pricing also reflects in the performance to a certain extent, althought the 960 Gigabyte model we've tested here is definitely no slow drive. We like the fact that Toshiba bundles this drives a very reasonable 3-year pick-up and return warranty plan.

Having a look at the performance number shows that in sequential write and read the Toshiba TR200 is capable of pushing 536 MB/s over the bus while sequentially writing and 534 MB/s sequentially reading. In terms of random 4k performance this is also not slow drive, performing at 86'000 IOPS for 4k random write and 77'900 IOPS in random read. Overall performance is on a competitive level regarding the entry level price bracket.

Last but not least this leaves us talking about the price. The 960 Gigabyte version we've tested here features an MSRP of €269, which translates into €0.28 per Gigabyte. Compared to the current competition this is definitely competitive. Considering the good warranty plan, this is an attractively priced drive, which is worth having a look at.

Should you be looking for an aggressively priced 960 Gigabyte SSD, the TR200 can definitely be considered.
