Ivy Bridge, this is the codename of Intels latest CPU generation which is based on an overworked Sandy Bridge microarchitecture. We had the chance to test two new CPUs, namely the Core i7-3770K and the Core i5-3570K. Intel claims that the new quad core processors are faster than the previous generation of Core i7-2XXX as well as Core i5-2XXX CPUs. The new processors also come with 22 nanometer transistors and therefore improved energy efficiency.

Ivy Bridge - Line-Up

At launch Intel presents 14 new Ivy Bridge CPUs, whereas the manufacturer chose to launch three product lines: mobile Ivy Bridge, desktop Ivy Bridge and low power desktop Ivy Bridge processors. Concerning the mobile CPU line-up there you'll find the Core i7-3920XM, Core i7-3820QM, Core i7-3720QM, Core i7-3612QM and 3610QM. This means that there is a total of five new mobile processors. Regarding the desktop CPUs there are the Core i7-3770K, Core i7-3770, Core i5-3570K, Core i5-3550 and Core i5-3450. Last but not least there are the low power desktop CPUs, which have the names Core i7-3770T, Core i7-3770S, Core i5-3550S and Core i5-3450S.

Ivy Bridge CPU / GPU / Overclocking

Compared to Sandy Bridge the new Ivy Bridge processors are quite a bit more complex. Therefore the new state-of-the-art desktop CPUs are based on 1.4 billion transistors. The old Sandy Bridge CPUs were based on 995 Million transistors. This means equals about a 40 percent increase regarding the transistor count. On the other hand the die size shrank by 100 square millimeter from 265 square millimeter to 160 square millimeter. Intel has been able to do so by migrating to an new manufacturing process. The new transistors come with 22 nanometer structures. But this is not enough: Intel also overworked the transistors themselves. Therefore they are the first to introduce tri gate transistors, which can be packed with a higher densitiy. The new flagship model, the Core i7-3770K, now has a TDP of 77 Watts. The former performance desktop CPU king, the Core i7-2700K, had a TDP of 95 Watts. Intel could even increase clock speeds to 3.5 GHz standard and 3.9 GHz turbo and they still stay within the lower TDP of 77 Watts.

Intels Z77-Express chipset is the first Chipzilla offers that natively supports USB 3.0. Via PCH there are four USB 3.0 ports which a motherboard manufacturer can make use of. Furthermore there is also PCI Express 3.0 support. Therefore the maximum bandwith the PCI Express bus offers, has doubled. Like this Ivy Bridge is ready, even for next generation GPUs. Regarding SATA port you find the same configuration like with P67 or Z68. What you get is two SATA 6Gbps ports and four SATA 3Gbps ports. If a motherboard manufactutrer wants to provide more than two SATA 6 Gbps ports, then then have to put controllers from ASMEDIA or Marvell onto the PCB. Another improvement over previous chipset is the fact that Z77, combined with Ivy Bridge, can handle up to three independant displays. The predecessors were limited to two displays.
In order to prevent the memory subsystem from becoming a bottlenck there is a dual channel memory interface whereas the individual DIMMs can be clocked at 1600 MHz. Generally we noticed that the integrated memory controller of Ivy Bridge can quite easily cope with memory clocked at 2400 MHz. Nevertheless Intel guarantees stability up to 1600 MHz.

Overclocking

Regarding Ivy Bridge the multiplyer can now but adjusted up to 63. Paired with a BCLK of 110 MHz this results in clock frequencies, which are close to 7 GHz. Results like this have already been reached quite some time before this launch. Ivy Bridge also allows to change the clock frequency of the integrated graphics unit in real time. Earlier on we've been writing about the very good memory overclockability. Intel mentions that up to 2667 MHz are possible. Some days ago we've seen proof that even DDR3-3200 is was possible without the use of extreme cooling methods.

3DMark 06

3DMark 06 is getting older these days. Therefore if you are using really powerful graphic cards you will hit CPU limitation which means that the graphic card isn't the bottleneck in the system. This is also the reason why in recent high-end desktop systems 3DMark 06 scales nicely with the CPU and the graphic card has much less influence on the scores.

3DMark Vantage

3DMark Vantage is able to squeeze nearly everything out of a recent system. Therefore the feature liste is also pretty long: DirectX10, FP16-HDR, motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping, GPU-physics simulation and different shader effects are being used to even make recent high-end systems struggle.

Cinebench

The test procedure consists of two main components: The first test sequence is dedicated to the computer's main processor. A 3D scene file is used to render a photoreaslistic image. The scene makes use of various CPU-intensive features such as reflection, ambient occlusion, area lights and procedural shaders. During the first run the benchmark only uses one CPU (or CPU core) to ascertain a reference value. On computers that have multiple CPUs or CPU cores and on those that simulate multiple CPUs (via HyperThreading or similar technolgies), Cinebench will run a second test using all available CPU power.

Crysis DirectX10

Crysis is still one of the games which has very high system requirements. Therefore developer Crytek implemented Direct3D-10-API, High-Dynamic-Range-Rendering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, Soft Shadows, Motion Blur, Depth of Field as well as Soft Particles. We test Crysis by using DirectX10 to show CPU-sacaling especially which low resolutions. If we look at the high resolutions we are able to spot that the CPUs influence compared to the graphic card becomes much less important.

Resident Evil 5 DirectX10

Resident Evil uses nearly every modern rendering technology: HDR, Hemisphere Lighting, Soft Shadows, Soft Particles, Field- und Motion-Blur oder auch Alpha to Coverage and static Ambient Occlusion. Furthermore Resident Evil 5 has been optimized for multicore architectures and already comes DirectX11 ready. By using the DirectX10 benchmark we can again show you CPU-scaling with low resolutions and the compared to the CPU overproportional influence of the graphics card at high resolutions.

Street Fighter4

Street Fighter 4 comes with an extra benchmark version which makes testing you system childrens play. At low resolutions the system requirements are pretty low and we can see CPU-scaling in the results. At high resolution the graphic card becomes more important and the CPUs clock speed has less influence on the fps.

Conclusion

First of all: during the past years it was an absolute rarity that a new Intel CPU generation was compatible to an earlier chipset. Therefore we like it even more that Ivy Bridge also works in combination with Z68 and P67 Revision B3. The only thing you'll have to do is a BIOS update in order make the board compatible to the Ivy Bridge CPUs. Therefore it would be possible to upgrade a system you bought more than a year ago with the latest CPU. Furthermore it was time that there finally was native support for USB 3.0 via the PCH. With Z77 users finally get chipset native USB 3.0 support. What's also new is that Ivy bridge offers 16 PCI Express 3.0 lanes. Therefore expansion card which need a lot of bandwidth can profit from a throughput which has been doubled.

Quite honestly, Ivy Bridge's performance is just impressive. Frankly speaking: lower dissipation power, higher energy efficiency and more performance per clock, that's what Ivy Bridge offers over Sandy Bridge. With Ivy Bridge, Intel was able to leave Sandy Bridge behind performance wise, whereas Ivy Bridge only has a TDP of 77 Watts compared to the 95 Watt Sandy Bridge has to cope with. In single threaded benchmarks a Core i7-3770K is almost eleven percent faster than a Core i7-2600K and looking a multithreaded benchmarks reveals a 15 percent increase in performance over the Core i7-2600K.
What we also liked was the performance of the IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor). Although Intel is still running behind AMDs Llano there is a very significant increase compared to the HD 3000, which can be found in the Intel Core i7-2600K. If Intel keeps on pushing graphics performance like this, it will take chipzilla another two generations until they can finally keep up or even overtake AMD. The last thing, but definitely not the least, we look at is engery consumption. Especially when we used the integrated graphics processors it was excellent. In idle mode our test system which, equipped with a Core i7-3770K, needed as little as 35 Watts.

Another thing which has been improved, is the integrated memory controller. Although the standard fequency is still at 1600 MHz it's been quite easy to reach 2400 MHz or even 2667 MHz with high performance memory. In our Forum Roger (splmann) Tanner is playing with some 4 x 4 Gigabyte Corsair Vengenace memory and they're running at 1380 MHz (effective 2760 MHz). In a following article we'll show what will be the performance benefits when you increase the memory clocks by 1 GHz.

From today on you can buy a Core i7-3770K for 313 US-Dollar and the Core i5-3570K is available for as little as 212 US-Dollar. There is no doubt, the pricing for Ivy Bridge CPUs is very attractive. On the other hand this leaves a big questionmark behind the princing of Intels Extreme CPUs.

Intels Core i7-3770K can be bought at Steg Computer and Electronics for CHF 339.-
