iFixit tear down on Surface Pro 3

Hard to fix

You could say there is aboslutely nothing safe before iFixit. The website is taking apart every single piece of hardware they're getting into their hands and this time it's the Surface Pro 3 receiving iFixits special treatment.

Lets talk about the result first. The Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft scores the lowest possible: 1/10. But why is it so hard to fix then? First of all it's almost impossible to open the thing without damaging any of the parts. Other than that there are only two pieces of hardware that can be exchanged, which is the SSD and the power supply. And if you want to swap the PSU then you'll have to remove very sticky tape which makes it really tough to not break anything. Furthermore there is the display connector which is not standard and only Microsoft itself seems to have the parts to exchange.

Tablets like the Surface Pro 3 where battery life is one of the most critical features should offer the possibility to swap the battery pack. But instead almost all tablet makers, sacrifice this feature for slimmer design. It's almost a miracle that the SSD can be exchanged.
