AMD releases Catalyst 14.9 WHQL drivers

AMD R9 285 support and performance improvements

AMD has finally released its newest set of WHQL certified AMD Radeon drivers, the Catalyst 14.9 WHQL. While we had a couple of beta drivers earlier, these are the first WHQL certified driver from AMD in quite a while. The new Catalyst 14.9 WHQL drivers brings support for recently released AMD Radeon R9 285 graphics card, a rather extensive list of performance improvements in various applications and games as well as a couple of new features and fixes.

According to the release notes, the new Catalyst 14.9 WHQL drivers has support for all desktop and mobile GPUs since the Radeon HD 5000 graphics card series as well as support for pretty much any currently available APU on the market.

As noted, the release notes include a rather extensive list of performance improvements for benchmarks and games and range from 4 to 50 percent, depending on the benchmark/game as well as the GPU/APU. The list includes Futuremark's 3DMark Sky Diver, Fire Strike and 3DMark11 benchmarks, as well as Bioshock Infinite, Company of Heroes 2, Crysis 3, GRID Autosport, Murdered: Soul Suspect, Plants vs. Zombies, Batman: Arkham Origins, Wildstar, Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV, Lichdom, and StarCraft II games.

The new Catalyst 14.9 WHQL drivers also bring an updated AMD Mantle API, support for Mantle on AMD mobile GPUs with Enduro technology, couple of AMD Eyefinity enhancements, including mixed-resolution modes and display alignment, new video color and display settings in Catalyst Control Center and JPEG decoding acceleration for certain GPUs. The new Catalyst 14.9 WHQL drivers also resolve couple of issues including 60Hz SST flickering on the AOC U2868PQU panel on certain AMD Radeon graphics cards, 4K flickering issues seen on AMD R9 290 series and HD 7800 series, screen tearing issues on AMD Crossfire, instability issues in GRID Autosport running in Eyefinity and geometry corruption in State of Decay.

As always, the new Catalyst 14.9 WHQL drivers are available for Windows 8 and Windows 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions and can be found over at AMD's support site via link below.
