Flexible displays for smartphones and other mobile devices are certainly the next big thing and although we have already seen some attempts, like the LG G Flex, Samsung Galaxy Round and the Galaxy Note Edge, these are just bent screens and not foldable screens, which are, according to Samsung, coming next year.
According to a report from ZDNet.com,
quoting a senior Samsung executive, the next step will be screens that can be "folded in half", suggesting that we will see a smartphone that will be bendable or foldable in one way or the other.
Samsung's display department is gearing up for production of such screens and will have a capacity to make anywhere between 30k to 40k units per month by the end of next year. Currently, no other competitor will have such production capacity and Samsung will certainly try to use that advantage.
While nothing is still carved in stone, the device that comes out in 2015 with such screen will most likely be a "limited edition" product as well, similar to the Galaxy Note Edge.
Samsung Display department also has big plans for AMOLED screens and is preparing the tech that will allow it to compete directly with LCD. In order to do that, Samsung will definitely have to lower the cost of its AMOLED screens.
