AMD switching focus to Vega GPU

Coming with HBM2

Now that we are drawing closer to the official launch of the first Polaris-based Radeon RX 480 graphics card, AMD is shifting its focus on future GPUs, namely the Vega GPU architecture.

Rumored to be paired up with 2nd generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2), the Vega GPU will be the proper high-end GPU, unlike Polaris. Graphics cards based on the Vega GPU should compete with Nvidia's high-end GTX 1080 and possibly the upcoming GTX 1080 Ti as well.

According to a tweet from Radeon Technologies Group chief, Raja Koduri, he will be at Shanghai during this week and working "in Vega mode". While this does not necessary means that Vega will come anytime soon, it still shows that AMD is now focused on future GPUs.

Earlier released roadmap showed that Vega GPU should come in early 2017 but the recent rumors also point to October 2016 as a potential launch date, which should allow AMD to take both mainstream and high-end market in the same year.

Vega will be also based on 14nm FinFET manufacturing process and both Samsung and GlobalFoundries should be ready to make it. The 2nd generation High Bandwidth Memory is also ready and in full production so all points that we might actually see the Vega GPU earlier than expected.
